Michael Palin on Motörhead ~ Rock'n Roll One of the studios used to make Rock 'n' Roll was Redwood in London, which was co-owned by (More) One of the studios used to make Rock 'n' Roll was Redwood in London, which was co-owned by Michael Palin. The studio engineer helping Motörhead had worked on all the Monty Python records and played the band outtakes the Pythons never put out. Palin was asked to come down and do a recitation for the album and showed up dressed in a 1940s cricketer outfit — V-necked sweater, his hair all brushed to one side. Lemmy remembers Palin walking in and saying, "Hello, what sort of thing are we going to do now, then?" and answering "Well, you know in The Meaning of Life, there was this speech that began "Oh Lord —". Palin replied "Ah! Give me some cathedral" and went in and recorded the 'Oh Lord, look down upon these people from Motörhead' speech. "Oh Lord, who art on high, who hast made the blades of grass, and the little tiny things that creep therein, that hath made the cricket bats, who has made hankies, who has made... all things, bless thou these people from Motorhead, that they may so verily endow the people of this planet with pleasure and enjoyment that yea, they may verily increase fourfold their already large sums of loot and enable them here in this life to purchase maybe one other pair of trousers each. Oh Lord, thou who hast seen the trouserless and had compassion, look down upon them. Thank you." (Less)
WE LIKE TO DRINK: We Like To Rock'n'Roll "The Unband embraces everything unhealthy, idiotic and irresponsible about rock music as only (More) "The Unband embraces everything unhealthy, idiotic and irresponsible about rock music as only someone from a benign college town [Northampton, Mass.] can....[They] make like a junior Motorhead in all their grizzly, amphetamine-metal glory..." — Rolling Stone The Unband made every beautiful mistake a power trio can before imploding under the weight of their success and the fallout from a variety of celebratory pastimes. What made them THE Unband? Was it the partying until all the _________(insert drug or alcohol type) was gone, rocking so hard with elements of Spinal Tap simpering in, or the three of them on the floor, weeping with uncontrollable giggles about something they made up in high school when they first became friends. Drummer Eugene Ferrari sums up the core of his power trio's other bandmates, "They both have hearts of gold...surrounded by layers of various other substances." During their unreign, they opened for Dio, Anthrax and Def Leppard to name a few of the mismatched tours. Their era was one of cockless rock, pre White Stripes, Hives, The Strokes. They accumulated a fan base ranging from bartenders and musicians to wall street guys and record label execs on down to the working stiffs who just wanted to unwind with some head-pounding music cranked up to 11. WE LIKE TO DRINK: We Like to Play Rock'n'Roll showcases the boys in all their anthemic rock dumbness, contrasted by just how likable and smart they actually are, as individuals and as the teaming, seething, frothing, Unband.
