Humanity's Great Challenge: Complete Eradication of Religion There are huge problems in the world: global warming, disease, famine, poverty, war, diminishing (More) There are huge problems in the world: global warming, disease, famine, poverty, war, diminishing resources, over-population, drug-abuse, ignorance, prejudice, injustice and so forth; but there is not one of these problems that would not be helped greatly by the once and for all eradication of religion.
Just think of all the hours, days, months, years, lifetimes that are squandered in bowing and scraping to a non-existent superstition? Think of the trillions and trillions of dollars wasted on building churches, mosques; printing nasty superstitious books that claim to be ultimate truth; creating, buying and selling religious relics and giving as wages to clerics who simply continue the vicious cycle of subservience to a non-existent god in a non-existent "other world".
The benefits of diverting all this time, money and effort away from superstitions to actually solving the massive problems of THIS world do not even require justification on rational and humane grounds. They are self-evident. But just in case you have never thought about this: Let's say an average of $1,000 per Muslim travelling from their country of origin to the Hajj (5th Pillar of Islam) and back at even only a tenth of all the 1.4 Billion Muslims that are commanded to complete this journey and you will have 140 million $1,000's to spend on the REAL problems of this world. Do the same with all the world religion's pilgrimages and the sums become mind-boggling - and that's just the superstitious pilgrimages. What about all the money spent on the building of new places of worship? And, perhaps most wasteful of all, what about calculating the value of each man- or woman-hour that the billions of religious people around the world spend in prayer, worship, religious writing and reading, religious debate and contemplation? And maybe even this loathsome waste of trillions of $'s of man- and woman-hours isn't the worst waste: what about the thousands upon thousands of great minds and hearts that never become the Einsteins, Mozarts and Voltaires that each generation would have if that generation were not hobbled by this pernicious mental slavery. The 21st Century and all future Centuries desperately need our children to become the best they can be - we need Leonardo da Vincis and David Attenboroughs and not Abu Hamzas and Ted Haggards.
Now I'm not talking about eradication in the sense of physically injuring religious people in ANY form. I do not advocate mental or physical violence against even the worst serial killers, so why should I wish mental or physical harm to a person who is simply ignorant and trapped in antiquated tribal beliefs?
No, my wish is that the Eradication of Religion becomes as tangible and acceptable a target for educated intelligent 21st Century humans as is the development of a commercially viable alternative to fossil-based fuels and a once-and-for-all cure for diseases such as AIDS.
So, I merely wish to start the ball rolling on this one. Let's have one or two or more people putting their hands up and saying "Yes, I agree - Let's put at the top of the list of the greatest aims of 21st Century humanity the Complete Eradication of religion".
That would be a start.
We have been pussy-footing around for too long. Arguing about how many angels you can get on the tip of a needle. Giving so much credence to this superstitious nonsense that we enter into detailed discussion about whether or not the Bible or the Qur'an contain logical contradictions; whether religious faith gives hope to millions; what balance of Creationism to Evolutionism should be taught in religious schools; whether a registrar is justified in refusing to marry gay couples on religious grounds.
Let's think much more carefully about how we can help each other to make the Complete Eradication of Religion one of the key targets of modern 21st Century thinkers. That's one of the first stages. The next stages of implementing it within government policy will have to wait. Unless, that is, you have ideas that can help to fast-track the realisation of this noble aim. I would simply love to see in my lifetime the British government pass laws that outlaw all religious funding and all religious justifications for action or any sort. I can but dream... (Less)
