I had reserved a car, but when I got to the airport, which is really, really small, all their cars were at the rental office in town and all they had at the airport were 4X4 Jeeps. They gave me the option to upgrade or wait while they brought the car to me. My company was paying and the Jeep was probably twice as much per day as the car, so I told them I would wait. I waited about half an hour then they told me they would just let me have the Jeep at the car price. I thought afterwards that maybe this was a scam they did to get people to upgrade to the Jeep and pay more, but it backfired with me because I didn't want to spend my bosses money so willy-nilly. I wonder now if they even had cars at the in-town location. It worked out great for me. I even got off-road and saw some great sites in and around Arches National Park. There was one road I was on, I remember it had signage at the start of the trail that said a 4 wheel drive vehicle was required. It was about 4 miles long. About half way down that road, and keep in mind this isn't paved, it really didn't look like a pathway at all. I'm driving over big rocks, and the Jeep is handling it just fine but I'm being thrashed around almost and wishing I had stabilizers like the vehicle did. Honestly, if I were prone to motion sickness, I would've felt sick. I was having tons of fun actually, but when I was about two miles into the trail, I got to a point where the rocks I'm driving on were looking more and more like boulders and the jarring around I was getting, while exciting in a way, made me wonder just what the last two miles of the trail would be like. I was alone, and my cell phone didn't have reception, and nobody knew where I was, and the sun was starting to go down. Looking up the trail I saw bigger rocks and the passage looked more and more precarious, and as it was it had crossed briefly a couple of times that the Jeep could've roll over. I was at a spot where I could manage to turn the Jeep around and return the way I came from, and I decided to to that. I've always regretted not finishing that road, but that was my first experience at 4X4 driving on something more technical than a flat dirt road and I knew that if I needed to, I probably wouldn't have been able to flip a bitch (pull a U-ee, or do a U-turn, whatever you call it) up further on the trail. barely could where I was at, almost wedged in between rocks as the trail was.
Tons of fun. I even saw some petroglyphs in Sego Canyon and some other sites in Arches National Park. I am facinated by petroglyphs and was glad to stumble on those! (Less)
