Raising Great Kidz
iMarriage -- Part 5
February 17th, 2008
Luke 15:11-32
Jesus said, "Let the children come to me. Don't stop them! For the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to such as these." Matthew 19:14 (NLT)
"Children are a gift from the LORD; they are a reward from him." Psalm 127:3 (NLT)
What Does The Bible Have To Say About Raising Great Kids?
The Bible Says...
1. Kidz Need A Home Where God Is Welcomed.
"These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates." Deuteronomy 6:6-9 (NIV)
2. Kidz Need Parents Who Reflect Jesus Christ.
"God has called us to be holy, not to live impure lives." 1Thessalonians 4:7 (NLT)
"God is working in you, giving you the desire to obey him and
the power to do what pleases him." Philippians 2:13 (NLT)
"Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven." Matthew 5:16 (NIV)
3. Parents Need To Live How God Expects Them To.
"Be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them slip from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children after them." Deuteronomy 4:9 (NIV)
"Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it." Proverbs 22:6 (NIV)
4. Parenting Requires God's Direction And Strength.
"If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him."
James 1:5 (NKJV)
"I can do everything with the help of Christ who gives me the strength I need." Philippians 4:13 (NLT)
What If My Kidz Are Far From God?
Start By Thanking God For Who They Are. (Luke 15:11-12)
Luke 15:11-12 (NIV)
"There was a man who had two sons. The younger one said to his father, 'Father, give me my share of the estate.' So he divided his property between them."
Let God Bring Them To Their Senses. (Luke 15:13-17)
Luke 15:13-17
"Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living. After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need. So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs. He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything. "When he came to his senses, he said, 'How many of my father's hired men have food to spare, and here I am starving to death!"
Learn To Accept Them Like God Does. (Luke 15:20b-24)
Luke 15:20b-24 (NIV)
"But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him. "The son said to him, `Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.' "But the father said to his servants, `Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let's have a feast and celebrate. For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.' So they began to celebrate."
Pray That God's Will Is Done In Their Lives. (Luke 15:28-32)
Luke 15:28-32 (NIV)
"The older brother became angry and refused to go in. So his father went out and pleaded with him. But he answered his father, 'Look! All these years I've been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends. But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!' "'My son,' the father said, 'you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.'"
