Runco's Weekly Music - Paco De Lucia - Cobre Guest writer... Randy -- from duke law. great contribution... thanks.
True Story: In high school (More) Guest writer... Randy -- from duke law. great contribution... thanks.
True Story: In high school I dated a girl named Meg whose mother is Cuban. Meg's mom and I got to talking one day about classical guitar music, and I mentioned Paco De Lucia. Having just finished talking about Andres Segovia, she must have figured Paco was just as innocuous, and asked to borrow a CD.
Two days later the CD was returned to me with the following note: "My mom put the CD on for about 5 seconds, ran to the CD player, turned it off, and said 5 Hail Mary's." Unbeknownst to me at the time, flamenco music is "gypsy" music and conjures, for some, associations with black magic and the devil.
I don't know much about all that stuff, but I do know that Paco de Lucia burns up a fretboard something fierce. Some have actually called him the best guitar player alive today.
I've chosen Paco by himself this time so you can get a feel for how incredible he is. If you like this and want to check out some of his work with other artists, I recommend the album Friday Night in San
Francisco, a killer album in which Paco plays with Al Di Meola (who played in Chick Corea's band for a while before striking it out on his own) and John McLaughlin (who played with Miles Davis on Bitches Brew and a Tribute to Jack Johnson), and the song Zyryab, in which Paco plays the steel guitar with Chick Corea on piano.
The tune is Cobre, off Antologia Vol. 2
Enjoy
