The song was recorded back in Oct. 2k8 (Masskara Festival month here in Sugar City), during the (More) The song was recorded back in Oct. 2k8 (Masskara Festival month here in Sugar City), during the session that produced the single Communique. If youve read our earlier blogs, both tracks featured our original guitarist Christian del Castillo (call it a reunion of sorts) who was then here in Sugar City for a holiday as hes now based in Japan. To make the track sound a bit more lo-fi we bounced the original digital tracks to our lowly Tascam 4 track cassette recorder, then mastered it back to the hard drive hence its tinny and brittle quality. Personally, I was aiming for an almost vinyl-like sound with some tape hiss thrown in. You might be wondrin why the hell would I want that? Well, I got too much time on my hands, and I reckon why the hell not? Its a drug tune, and its meant to somehow simulate the sound of being under the influence, at least in my mind, hehe. Chris guitar part used here, is actually the second (and the only full length) take. I just told him to wing it (which is usually the same thing I said to all my bandmates! Hehe) as we were both kinda beat after doing Communique less than an hour before, and dammit he nailed it good! Must be the Jack Daniels he brought that made it extra spicy, hehe. As for the singing, what you hear here is the original vocal guide I made while Chris was recording his part. I dint bother re-recording, coz like I said I was aiming for an unpolished almost garage-like shit (and Im a lazy sod!), and I was smashed enough to emulate (again in my mind) my main inspiration for this song, which is Iggy Pop. A perfect foil to Chris guitar which somehow sounded a bit close to the late Ron Asheton (little did we know of his fate months later, much love and respect to him R.I.P. Ron). At the same time, his licks were reminiscent of The Cult circa their Love album (which was like a bugged out affair then). The backing tracks though is another story, twas inspired by 80s one-hit-wonder Paul Hardcastle (to the lil kids, he had a number 1 UK hit, an anti-war oldskool electro anthem entitled 19, check Youtube for its hard hitting video). Must admit though, Im quite a fan of his music (I bought 2 of his lps, and later his best of CD). And as a dj wannabe (only coz I cant dance!), I used to play his tracks during breakdancing battles which we would randomly organize after school. Ah, I miss em days! hehe Needless to say, this is a fucked up marriage between The Stooges and 80s electro-boogie! By the way, the original length of the track, is over 7 mins. long (almost the same length as Hardcastles 12 mix of 19), but I trimmed about a minute off as not to bore the non-medicated set, hehe. So there, a lil backstory for yall regarding the Drugstar Now, wed like to sincerely thank all the remixers/producers who contributed such awesomely wonderful renditions. We are truly elated and flattered that you spent yer precious time and effort making this a very special baby. Yall sick and wicked indeed! And of course, props to all our pals (both online and offline) for yer boundless support. Certainly we dint expect this to be bigger nor better than our singles from last year (e.g. The Manifest, Tokers Now, Meet The Dead, etc), but damn, this is sucha funky TRIP indeed. Needless to say, this is another beginning, and we got more tunes coming yer way (we already got a couple in the hard drive!). But we reckon we should take a short hiatus from all matters fs&c, and tackle more personal projects. One of which is an upcoming co-writing and co-production duties for Moaner Lisa, and of course the upcoming SSS label which needs all attention it deserves. But rest assured yall 2k9 will indeed be another kickass year! Were just so hopin that you aint sick of us yet, haha. Cheers to the drugged out Ox!
