Hi, this is another Dragon's Lair NES video review. I know there are many on the internet, but this is a proper review.. many people don't understand this game, suck at playing it, and bash it without any real reason. I mean, this isn't a masterpiece, but is a decent game aimed to people who already know and appreciate the original laser-game..
The original 1983 arcade game is an interactive movie, that requires quick reflexes and memory. You simply have to do the right move at the right time, following the flashing hints on screen. The NES version tries to replicate the same mechanics on an 8-bit console, and guess what? it succeeds.
First of all, this is the PAL european version, which is much faster and smoother than the american one. The control also are better, because they're most responsive and quick. We can say the USA version is a beta, because much stuff is missing.. You'll see.
As I said, the game replicates the same gameplay mechanics of the arcade, this means you have to make the right move at the right time: trying, memorizing and trying again. If you make a wrong move or you miss the timing, you're dead. The game is designed so you have to stop in particular places, duck in others, fire in others, then proceed. Quite like in the original arcade.
As you see, the game isn't easy at all, a little mistake and you're toast! Many little kids bought the game when it was released, lured by the pretty graphics, and most of them never did manage to clear the first screen. I understand the consequent trauma, but again to play this game you must be open minded. This is not your average platform game, this is more of a puzzler, a challenge for the mind. There are also many secrets i won't spoil on this review, as special weapons and bonuses.
This in not a platform game, nor an action one: this is a sort of puzzle challenge, where you must use quick reflexes, accuracy, brain and memory. I know it can be frustrating at first, but it replicates the mood of the arcade, and with practice it becomes a very rewarding game.
Here's the first boss, missing in the USA version of the game.
In the end, this game can be understood and appreciated only if you have played the original one back in the eighties. It replicates succesifully the atmosphere and the gameplay of Dragon's Lair arcade, and for an 8-bit game is an incredible achievement. You have to do the right moves at the right time, and averything is very hard at first but becomes easy with practice. As a platform game this is abysmal, but as a faithful conversion of the arcade, it's simply amazing. (Less)
