In the summer of 1979 there was no escaping the moans of Linda Ledesma (Mrs. Mouzon) or the breathy (More) In the summer of 1979 there was no escaping the moans of Linda Ledesma (Mrs. Mouzon) or the breathy vocals of Christine Wiltshire (Christie Shire) or Holly Oas. The girls were topping the disco charts and creating a buzz as Poussez! The real force however behind Poussez! was Alphonse Mouzon. By the time of the release of the "Poussez!" album Mouzon was a veteran in the studio. Born on November 21, 1948, in Charleston, S.C., Mouzon got serious with his drumming in high school, where he studied as both a saxophonist and a drummer. Relocating to New York City in the late 1960's to attend college, Alphonse quickly chose his career path and was soon a key studio player on recordings by Tim Hardin, Gil Evans, Weather Report, Norman Connors, John Klemmer and Teruo Nakamura. Mouzon also started a solo recording career as an artist with his 1972 release "The Essence Of Mystery" and 1973's "Funky Snakefoot." At the same time he joined Larry Coryell's Eleventh House, with whom he appeared on several releases in 1974 and 1975. He also continued releasing solo album's like 1974's "Mind Transplant," and 1977's "Back Together Again" (with Larry Coryell). In 1978 he released "In Search Of A Dream" with Weather Report band mate Miroslav Vituous before coming to the attention of Vanguard Records owner Danny Weiss. Christine Wiltshire was a disco pro by 1979. She had already graced disco hits by Herbie Mann, Eddie Kendricks and Musique among others. Holly Oas had her taste of disco as well by singing alongside Bruni Pagan on her "Just Bruni" album featuring the hit "Fantasy." Mouzon composed four fiery tracks then played all the keyboards, synthesizers, drums and most of the percussion for what would become the "Poussez!" album. He recruited Oas and Wiltshire for their vocals and history was made. Three of the album tracks became huge club hits. 12" singles were released on "Come On And Do It" (2-singles a long Roy Thode remix and a radio release with two shorter versions) and "Boogie With Me" (the album version). "Never Gonna Say Goodbye" gave the album it's sales despite the 12" single releases. In 1985 and 1986 remixer extraordinaire Ben Liebrand gave his magic touch to import singles of "Come On And Do It" and "Never Gonna Say Goodbye." The following year in the wake of disco's death Mouzon had one more Poussez! album, "Leave That Boy Alone." Once again Alphonse wrote, produced, arranged, conducted and played most of the instruments. The 12" single of "Leave That Boy Alone" failed to generate the excitement of his previous releases and the album, though good, didn't chart. For this release Connie Harvey (Angela Bofill, Inner Life, etc.) and Janet Wright (Phyllis Hyman, Inner Life, etc.) provided the vocal duties. The four singers would go on to many other projects over the next quarter of a century. Mouzon ironically scored one more club hit in 1981 with "Everybody Get Down." The Vanguard 12" single was originally recorded in 1979 but not released for two years. It was billed as by Mouzon's Electric Band. Since then Alphonse has returned to his jazz roots where he continues to be a major force.
