Packer has said that the puritans were the godliest generation since the first century church, for something amazing happened in the puritan era. But when that generation passed from the scene, something of great importance was quickly lost from the consciousness of the church -- the biblical doctrine of the family. Now, we believe it is time to study it and recover it and expand upon it and move forward for the glory of God. We need a reformation of biblical family life, and there will be no reformation without setting the doctrinal foundation and having the courage for a radical turning. This conference is designed to help us make progress in turning to a biblical vision for family life. Historical Background When the protestant reformation swept Europe, everything changed. The doctrine of the sufficiency of scripture, which lay at the root of the reformation, caused transformations in every area of life. Not only was there a return to the biblical doctrine of justification by faith alone, but the biblical doctrine of the family was also recovered. There was a profound reformation of family life during the protestant reformation. Then the successors of the reformers, the puritans, took the foundation that was laid and built upon it. They expanded on their predecessors' understanding of family life. They put doctrine into practice in church and home. And, they published many powerful treatises on the biblical doctrine of the family. Family life was reforming according to scripture. But something tragic happened. Many forces rose up to wage war against the family and instead of standing on the shoulders of the puritans and building further, the next generation fell to the ground, and the biblical doctrine of the family was largely lost... Until now! And now, God is raising up a new generation of believers who are recovering this important doctrine. This conference on the Puritan Family Reformation will work to remember what the puritans knew and build upon it as a foundation for the future. We hope to go back to where we lost our way, and pick up the trail and move foreword. This can happen if we remember the faith of our fathers and then humbly build upon their legacies. But first, we must recover what they had. It is Time to Turn Around It's time to be about the business of recovering the Biblical doctrine of the family in our generation. The church in each generation is in need of reformation and renewal on several fronts. Family reformation is not the only area, but it is one of the key areas. This can only happen when the church has a high view of God, as evidenced by a high view of the Word of God. Reformation will break out when we take seriously what He has said, instead of taking Him lightly. All reformations have the same qualities: There is a recovery of the lost book of the law There is a desire for the glory of God There is passion for spreading the gospel There is repentance of dead works, and a desire to be faithful in all things There is a revival of love in the hearts for the gospel. And, there is a turning of hearts in the family, for Malachi 4 tells us that to one of the signs of gospel love is that the "hearts of the fathers turn to their children and the hearts of the children turn to their parents." Ultimate Objectives Our primary objective is the glory of God; our ultimate desired impact is evangelistic; our message is the centrality of the Gospel in all things; our longing is for an increase our appreciation for God and His Word in the church; our prayer is for a reformation of church and home life. Speakers The speakers at this conference each bring a unique approach to the subject. Historian, Dan Ford has been involved in recovering the written record of reformation and Puritan documents on the subject for many years. Jeff Pollard is publishing many of the key documents of this reformation at Mount Zion's Chapel Library. Scott Brown, Jason Dohm, Steve Breagy and Dan Horn are all elders at Hope Baptist church and are involved in implementing these critical Bible doctrines in everyday church life. Come join us for family reformation in the twenty first century. (Less)
