ALPHABET WILD: What is it with the letter 'P' in the NHL playoff teams and ANIMALS? I wanted to figure this out so here is what I found.
So here it is, everything you ever wanted to know about the alphabet and the 2012 NHL playoff teams but were afraid to ask.
Out of the 16 teams there are 3 cities have the letter 'P' (Phildelphia, Pittsburgh and Phoenix) and 3 have team names that start with 'P'. (Penguins,Predators, Panthers) which all represent the animal kingdom meaning a total of almost a full 33% of the teams have a letter 'P' as a starting letter in either the teams name or teams city name
and of those 5 out 16 that use the letter 'P' , four use animals: i.e. Phoneix's 'Coyotes' being the 4th of the aforementioned three teams.
Making for a total of 6- p mentions in combined full city names and team names out of all teams currently playing.
So I wanted to push this a little further and the result is very interesting!
Next in line is a three way tie for 4 mentions with 'b', 'c' and 's' with a full one third of them belonging to Boston and Chicago respectively.
4 B's- boston bruins,blackhawks,blues
4 C's -canucks, chicago, coyotes, capitals
4 S's - san (jose) + sharks, st (louis), senators (interesting to note is sj is currently playing st louis at the moment)
Then comes 'N' in its own class with 3 mentions :
3N's - new (jersey), new (york), nashville
Next down the list are six (6) letters as shown below that start the names of either two (2) team names or city names
each shared alone or in combination with another teams for a total of 9 teams that have at least one starting letter in
either name or city name in common with any other teams city name or team names starting letter.
2D's- detroit and devils
2W's- (red) wings, washington
2R's- rangers, red (wings)
2L's- los, louis
2F's - flyers, florida
2J's - (san) jose, (new) jersey
And then finally there are 5 single letters belonging to just 4 teams with city names and team names combined for either an individual letter i.e. just one, one letter
starting for either a city name or team name that is NOT shared with ANY other team name or city name.
And they are as follows: V, A, K, Y, O,
Vancouver (Canucks), (Los) Angeles +Kings, (New) York (Rangers), and Ottawa.
1v - vancouver
1a- angeles
1k - kings
1y - york
1o - ottawa
As you will notice, interestingly enough, all four of those teams are playing each other respectively and only two will advance.
The only teams with a claim to the one starting letter each in their city names for the playoff teams are Vancouver , Ottawa with the
'Y' in New York included. (As noted, the 'L' is Los Angeles is shared with the 'L' in St. Louis. and the 'New' in New York is sahred with 'new' Jersey.)
But with an air of finality here, something you would not expect, is that there are only two teams
out of all 16 (with NY being the odd name out) that have city names which do not share anything in common for a
starting letter with any other city name or team name:
V belongs to Vancouver, O to Ottawa.
That's pretty wild, eh?

But finally this leaves just ten (10) letters that have no mention for either starting a city name or team name in the NHL 2012 Playoffs

Yes, quick recap for you: 16 teams, 16 letters.
And there are just 2 'team names' WITHOUT a starting letter in common with any other team names in the playoffs:
Flyers and Kings .
Yes thats right! 'f' and 'k' ! Both American and ours are city names both Canadian.
