Success breeds ambitions, and ambition tempered with pragmatism is progress. After playing the most significant catalyst in developing Indian racing for more than a decade and a half, JK Tyre towards the end of 2010 took another giant leap of progress. This time it stunned the motorsports fraternity by announcing its bold decision to buy the title rights of what was formerly known as Formula BMW Asia Pacific. Thus was the birth of the JK Racing Asia Series and JK Tyres made history by becoming the first Indian corporate house to buy an FIA accredited racing series.
For those who came in late, globally this series has traditionally been the launch pad, and the most consistent supply line, of Formula One drivers. As many as seven current Formula One drivers have passed through the portals of this series in their formative years of junior formula racing. Of course, the biggest name that comes to the mind is that of Sebastian Vettel. But apart from the youngest double world champion, the other marquee names include the likes of Nico Rosberg, Bruno Senna, Timo Glock, Adrian Sutil, Sergio Perez, Sebastien Buemi and Daniel Ricciardo. Little wonder then that JKRAS continues to be run as one of the support races to Formula One in the Asian region.
There is an interesting subtext to this acquisition by the Indian tyre giant. For the global motorsports community, 2009 and '10 were the meltdown years. Automobile giants like Honda, Toyota and BMW, which ran JKRAS in its previous avatar, quit the high profile world of Formula One and rolled back their global motor programmes due to adverse financial climate. During this turbulent period, the top management of JK Tyres decided to put into practice the guiding philosophy of the legendary investor and fund manager, Warren Buffet -- buy when others are selling. Thus at a cost of € 5million a year, the racing pioneer, bought the title rights of the series that still continues to be supported by BMW on the technical front.
"For some time we have been looking for an opportunity to buy an international series in the region," says Sanjay Sharma, head motorsports JK Tyres. "When the opportunity arose towards the end of 2010 we decided to move in. We have invested in the series with a clear road map of progress for Indian drivers. It offers the next level of single-seater racing. Also being a support race for three rounds of Formula One lends the series an additional glamour factor. It offers good value for money."
At this year's Indian GP, JK Tyre protégé, Aditya Patel made history by becoming the first Indian to climb on the podium twice in the 11th and 12th round of the championship. It, perhaps, is the most fitting tribute to tyre manufacturer's decision to invest this series. Apart from that, as many as seven Indian drivers lined up on the starting grid in front of the entire Formula One community, fulfilling one of the objectives of JK Tyre's decision to promote the championship.
This year, JKRAS made yet another historic pitstop. For the first time it ventured into Europe by running two rounds at the historic Paul Ricard circuit in Southern France. As the series continues to grow, the involvement of Indian team owners is also increasing. Chennai based Meco racing, which is run by former racing driver and instructor, has decided to enter a four car team from next year onwards to compete with some of the established names in the business like Meritus and Eurointernational.
