Eugeniusz Bodo - W hawajską noc, 1935 EUGENIUSZ BODO, né: Bohdan Eugène Junod (b. 1899 (More) EUGENIUSZ BODO, né: Bohdan Eugène Junod (b. 1899 in Genève, d. 1943 in the gulag Kotlas, Arkhangelsk Region, USSR). Singer and a comedy actor, one of the most popular faces in pre-war Poland. Born to a Polish mother and a Swiss father - who was a succesful manager in the nickelodeon and cabaret business in Warsaw. Since 1919, Eugène started performing on the little stages, quickly becoming one of the most popular stars in revue theatres of Warsaw („Qui pro Quo", „Morskie Oko" or „Wielka Rewia"). Almost each of the songs,performed by Bodo in the cabarets or on the silver screen, immediately became a hit: e.g. „Już taki jestem zimny drań" (Look, What a Cool Rascal I Am), „Baby, ach te baby" (Women, Oh These Women, "Tylko z tobą i dla ciebie" (With You Only, For You Only) or „Sex Appeal". He also performed in movie comedies: e.g. „Piętro wyżej" (Upstairs), „Robert i Bertrand" (Robert And Bertrand), „Czy Lucyna to dziewczyna" (Is Lucyna A Girl?), „Królowa przedmieścia" (Queen Of A Suburb). In spring 1939 he opened a fashionable bar „Cafe Bodo" and in August 1939 he prepared himself for the new season in the new Warsaw cabaret „Tip Top". After collapse of the heroic, 3-week defense of Warsaw, he left the capital city and went eastwards to Lwow, where he got under the Soviet occupation. As a holder of the Swiss passport he considered himself well protected from the possibility of arresting. And it was so, until 1941: he performed on the cafe or restaurant stages with a program composed of his pre-war hits, now sung also in Russian, accompanied by Henryk Wars' orchestra -- reestablished in Lwow under the name „Jazz Tea". On the 26 of June 1941, he was visited in his flat by the Soviet secret police (NKWD). The officers invited him „just for the short interview" to their city headquarters. Bodo went out only in his sumer overcoat -- to never come back. First kept in Butyrki prison in Moscow, then in the town Ufa, in 1943 that king of pre-war Warsaw theaters died of hunger in the gulag Kotlas, in Arkhangelsk region - becoming one more victim of hundreds of thousands of the Poles, murdered or sentenced to a slow death in gulag archipelago, after the Soviet invasion on Poland in September 1939. In ihren Liedern lästert die Entertainerin über menschliche Laster („Alte Mütter" und „Kranke Männer"), plaudert von weiblichen Unzulänglichkeiten („Spann mal aus") und männlichen Abgründen („Er redet nur"). Sie swingt über den „Sinn" des Lebens, singt melancholisch „Ich werde wie Mama", rockt den Mauerfall und reggaet die Kraft der Hormone. Die Meissner lässt nichts aus, nichtmal Schlager („Glückspilz").
