The Brain and Neural activity is the most exciting frontier of human insights.
People respond to life in different ways. To gain a better understanding of emotional styles we need to get inside the brain. It is where our emotions are generated. The search began with looking for patterns of activity. How people respond to these kind of challenges was the key to understanding why some people are different. Emotional styles can change.
We define MOOD as a pattern of emotion that PERSISTS for minutes or hours. A TRAIT can persist for a very long term but a trait is different to an EMOTIONAL STYLE because the emotional styles we describe come directly from neuroscientific research. Personality traits predated our understanding of the brain. Those are traits that emerged very early on in psychology's history before we had a deeper understanding of the brain.
The six styles we describe come directly from neuroscience research. These emerged over 30 years of work.
The discovery that the brain structure and function is not set in stone but it can change radically based on experience. Emotions tend to be located in a different part of the brain. The pre-frontal cortex is the most recent to develop over the course of evolution. The highest level of human thought.
