Soviet Tourism Moviereel This is a little video I made for a presentation (More) This is a little video I made for a presentation in a Government class about Communism. Naturally, I put most of my focus on the Soviet Union, and I needed a visual. Hence, this video.
Now, in case you don't know, this is obviously a very nonfactual representation of the Soviet Union. Yes, the USSR was behind the US in public tech, and yes, they did kill and starve their own people, and yes, they did have an iron grip on the press in their country, but-never mind. The entire video is basically indisputable fact.
This video is very special to me, because this is the first video in which I really wish I knew how to use something else other than Windows Movie Maker. Don't get me wrong, its a wonderful program, but...only one music track? I had to put the speech with this video, save the video, then import the video and overlay the existing audio with the music. An overly complicated solution to a stupid problem.
Also, did you know there are web sites that host a huge collection of old Soviet Union speeches and music? It is all imaginable amounts of cool. If you ever need a good old capitalistic laugh, go visit http://www.sovmusic.ru/english/index.php
It. Is. Fantastic.
The audio I used is actually Lenin giving a speech about something like how antisemitism is good for communism. In other words, if you can speak Russian, then this video will give you very, very mixed signals. Sorry in advance.
For the subtitles, you may notice that the grammar is sometimes a bit 'tweaked'. This is because I copied all the subtitles into a English to Russian translator, and plugged the resulting Russian into a Russian to English translator, in order to have the English fractured in some places. Sometimes, when I would plug the Russian in, the resulting English would be unintelligible, so I didn't bother with those parts. Honestly, I could have save a half an hour, and not done it at all for the effect it gives, but hey, I tried.
Also, my apologies about color of the subtitles, I know they are hard to read, but any other color is either even harder to read, or absolutely kills what atmosphere the speech, sepia tones, and grainy picture builds up in the video. Which, by the way, I was so thankful that Windows Movie Maker included. I've never understood why Microsoft decided to include those stupid film grains until I needed to make a stupid grainy film, which completely explains itself, I guess.
Oh well. Enjoy. AND COMMENT, COMRADE! WORKING MEN OF ALL COUNTRIES, UNITE! (Less)
