The Tenant of Wildfell Hall is the second and (More) The Tenant of Wildfell Hall is the second and final novel by English author Anne Brontë, published in 1848 under the pseudonym Acton Bell. Probably the most shocking of the Brontës' novels, this novel had an instant phenomenal success but after Anne's death her sister Charlotte prevented its re-publication. The novel is framed as a letter from Gilbert Markham to his friend and brother-in-law about the events leading to his meeting his wife. A mysterious young widow arrives at Wildfell Hall, an Elizabethan mansion which has been empty for many years, with her young son and servant. She lives there under an assumed name, Helen Graham in strict seclusion, and very soon finds herself the victim of local slander. Refusing to believe anything scandalous about her, Gilbert Markham, a young farmer, discovers her dark secrets. In her diary Helen writes about her husband's physical and moral decline through alcohol and the world of debauchery and cruelty from which she has fled. This novel of marital betrayal is set within a moral framework tempered by Anne's optimistic belief in universal salvation. The Tenant of Wildfell Hall is mainly considered to be one of the first sustained feminist novels. In 1996 the BBC adapted the book for the second time to a television serial, after having done so before in 1968. Directed by Mike Barker, the serial starred Tara FitzGerald as Helen Graham, Rupert Graves as her abusive husband Arthur Huntington and Toby Stephens as Gilbert Markham. The story is of a woman, Helen, who is on the run from an abusive and unloving relationship although it is a fair way into the story before one finds that out. Initially she just seems to be a cold and haughty woman who makes no effort to interact with the people who live around her and in fact goes out of her way to isolate herself and her son from anybody who shows any interest in them. One farmer, Gilbert Markham, isn't put off and continues to pursue her friendship. Eventually Markham tells Helen he loves her, she decides to confide in him and gives him her journal to read. Through this we discover that she had escaped from a marriage to Arthur Huntingdon that turned into a hell. As the abuse grows Helen feels that she has no option but to take her son and go into hiding. However, when Huntingdon falls seriously she returns to him, believing it is her obligation as his wife to be by his side and to nurse him through his mortal illness. After his death she still acts the dutiful wife, allowing herself a suitable period of mourning before returning once again to Wildfell Hall to resume a relationship with Markham. Huntingdon is a great character to play; he's everything from a seemingly loving husband, through scheming womaniser, boorish man who wants to be admired and finally a lonely and broken alcoholic. That gave Rupert Graves, dark, daring and in this role extremely handsome a chance to run the full gamut of his acting range, spiralling down into pretty monstrous behaviour toward hs wife and his son. Graves' Huntingdon is a perfect performance of the unreformable rogue. Yet despite all he has done, there is an undeniable human dignity in his refusal to play the hypocrite at the end; he is at least aware of his own failings and how they have brought his ruin.
