Watching Grey Seals, Funzie Bay, Fetlar, Shetland On Monday 9th July, with Shetland residents Paula (More) On Monday 9th July, with Shetland residents Paula Moss and Nat Hall, we went on a day visit to the island of Fetlar, the 'Garden of Shetland' it is known, for its fertile soils, acres of green grassland with a mix of wild flowers, some of them rare.
Following our bird watch at RSPB Loch of Funzie another treat was in store for us, and one which was undiscovered by us on our last visit to Fetlar in 2011. Further down the road from the Loch of Funzie is Funzie Bay next to the Old Haa, a haven for Atlantic Grey Seals swimming around the rocky shoreline to the cackling of geese on the pebble shoreline, with so many different birds such as gannets, guillemots, arctic terns, even puffin making their journey through this bay. Catherine and I scrambled along the rocky shoreline to get closer up views of these playful giants, the grey seal. Playful, as they often teased as I got the camera out to take photos and videos they disappeared quickly under the surface. Camera tucked away - the seals came out again at close quarters. By nature seals are curious animals; more and more seals were swimming towards us, making eye contact as they pop their heads above the water's surface.
Sitting at this bay it was so easy to forget about the time, I say that because there was a small matter of catching the ferry from Oddsta back to Yell and then onward back on the Shetland Mainland, but we did not want it to end. There was a sense of joy in watching this bay full of activity, the dramatic side too, of the sea striking the cliffs and sea stacks causing a fine spray to fill the air, and could spend many more hours watching here totally unaware of any sense of need to be somewhere else.
