But the English translations have never been an effective way to communicate the complexities and power of the epic poem. The English vocabulary can't seem to handle the poetics of the Finnish language, nor the forced 8-syllable structure of the Kalevala runes. ... Until now. Rather than trying to modernise The Kalevala, in this performance Scott Sandwich brings to light the awkwardness and impossibilities of translating The Kalevala into English, exploring the difference in language and culture, in a fast-paced and energetic live performance. This is a unique take on academic poetry and performance, incorporating humour and a virtuosic handle on performance poetry. This performance was created by Scott Sandwich (aka Tom Hogan) in January 2012, during his residency at Arteles, Finland.
