Cancer patient dies after savage beating A teenage boy accused of brutally attacking a (More) A teenage boy accused of brutally attacking a cancer patient outside a dollar store leaving him in a vegetative state plead guilty today and was sentenced to ten years in prison. Carl Berry, 44, was attacked by Michac Jones, now 17, and another youth last May outside a Louisville store. The attack was caught on CCTV which police were able to use to catch Jones, who was tried as an adult despite only being 16 when the attack took place. Mr Berry was undergoing chemotherapy treatments when he was beaten up. He was so severely injured he could not complete his cancer treatments. He had to undergo eye surgery and remains in a nursing home in a vegetative state. He will likely never recover. A 14-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, also plead guilty to the attack at an earlier date. Prosecutors say Jones is sentenced to ten years in jail, but will serve 180 days past his 18th birthday in November and then a judge may shock probate him. Attorney David Scott said: 'There's no good outcome in a case like this, but we feel like we struck a fair result that we hope the family of Carl Berry can live with and realize that Mechac Jones did take responsibility for what he did.' Jones' mother was originally charged in the case but they were later dropped. She was accused of tampering with evidence and trying to intimidate a witness.
