It's the nature of New York life that change is inexorable, that older buildings get plowed over in favor of new buildings, that yesterday's Lower East Side pickle stall becomes today's curtained mixology den, that Girls now tramps gleefully upon the memory of Sex and the City. But New York without Nora Ephron is just plain wrong. I join the V.F. family in mourning, and wishing futilely against, the devastating loss of our friend, colleague, and unfailingly entertaining dining companion, who passed away yesterday at the age of 71.
Nora was actually raised in Beverly Hills, where her parents worked as screenwriters, but in adulthood she was New York incarnate. If you want to take a smart, funny, brisk, real-time plunge into what the city was like in the 60s and 70s, you can do no better than Wallflower at the Orgy (1970) and Crazy Salad (1975), her two collections of the stuff she wrote in those trip-wire years for New York and Esquire, among other publications. The New Journalism movement was largely a boys' club. Nora didn't so much push to join this club as stake out her own Nora Journalism turf, doing participatory stories about the burgeoning feminist movement (she belonged to a particularly fraught consciousness-raising group) and crafting essays about food celebrities before anyone else had realized that we as a culture had developed food celebrities.
And then, she transcended mere journalism altogether to become this extraordinary polymath. I'll spare you the full C.V. and list of credits because it'll be done more professionally elsewhere, but here's a sampling: Nora the Novelist (Heartburn); Nora the Oscar-Nominated Screenwriter (Silkwood, When Harry Met Sally . . . ); Nora the Movie Director (Julie & Julia, Sleepless in Seattle); Nora the Playwright (Imaginary Friends). By rights she should also have been Nora the Insufferably Smug Over-Accomplisher, but here's the thing: this was a woman unfailingly generous of spirit, a person who authentically enjoyed making new friends of all ages, every day.
If you'll forgive this indulgence in the first person, only so that I may offer an example of what I mean, I first met her in what was putatively an interview situation—a meeting over drinks for a book I was writing about the evolution of the American food scene—and walked out with a new e-mail buddy and a plan to grab dinner A.S.A.P. with our significant others. Needless to say, the interview had gone well; explaining to me how world-rockingly transformative the advent of Julia Child had been in the early 60s, she said, "Sophisticated cooking became the thing to do: you were an adult, and therefore you cooked. And bought Le Creuset pots and good knives. It was just what you did—sort of like smoking dope became a few years later." Nora gave good quote. But the more important thing is, she kept on giving, way beyond that day.
Food, I think it's fair to say, was Nora's favorite subject; it ran through nearly all her work and conversation. She was an excellent home cook and an intrepid trier of new places. Last fall she was excited to go to the busy new Greenwich Village location of the pork-heavy restaurant Fatty 'Cue, crowing that she had finally figured out a way to secure a table: "Go on Yom Kippur." She shared my aggravation with the current vogue for fine-dining restaurants that take no reservations and shoehorn diners into cramped, pew-like seats, but, unlike me, she was undeterred; she and her husband, the writer Nick Pileggi, would venture southward and Brooklyn-ward from their Upper East Side home with stadium-style seat cushions in tow.
Though Nora had no delusions about being forever young—she famously felt bad about her neck, concealing it beneath turtlenecks and scarves (though, honestly, it was a perfectly pleasant neck to look at)—she remained forever curious, engaged, out on the prowl. That's what was amazing about her. She never fell into that older person's trap: that closed feedback loop of the same old friends, the same old war stories, the same old movies, the same old DVR'd programs, the same old recipes, the same old restaurants. In every sense, she stayed hungry.
Nora's final collection of essays, I Remember Nothing, published two years ago, concludes with a premonitory pair of lists headlined "What I Won't Miss" and "What I Will Miss." I think it's apt to quote from the latter, specifically a line about what, to Nora, constituted a perfect afternoon in her later life: "A frozen custard at Shake Shack and a walk in the park.
