But the initial plans were modified in 1961 with the announcement of President John F. Kennedy to send and deposit a man on the moon , and returning him safely before the end of the decade. The target was achieved with 17 months to spare when the July 20th of 1969 Neil Armstrong and Edwin Buzz Aldrin aboard Apollo 11 landed on the moon in the Sea of Tranquility . This milestone was broadcast around the world from the premises of Parkes Observatory ( Australia ). Initially the moon walk was to be relayed from the signal that reaches the Goldstone Tracking Station (California, USA), belonging to the Deep Space Network , but to bad signal reception we chose to use the station signal Honeysuckle Creek, near Canberra (Australia). 1 This broadcast the first moonwalk minutes, after which the signal from the Parkes Observatory was used again for the rest of the moonwalk. 2 facilities MDSCC in Robledo de Chavela ( Madrid , Spain ) also belonging to the Deep Space Network , served as support for the entire round trip. 3 4 The Apollo Project was one of the most important victories of modern technology. Six missions managed to land on the lunar surface ( Apollo 11 , 12 , 14 , 15 , 16 and 17 ) with a single failure: the mission Apollo 13 could not realize their goal by exploding tank oxygen liquid service module, but the crew returned safely. Prior to the projected decline missions to the surface of the Moon, systems were tested in several releases automatic flight (see Apolo 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 and 6 ), and then there were two tests in Earth orbit manned ( Apollo 7 and 9 ), and only two orbital missions (without landing) to the Moon ( Apollo 8 and 10 ). In 1973 , after the end of the lunar program, three Apollo spacecraft were used to send crews to the space station Skylab (missions SL-2, SL-3 and SL-4) and in 1975 was the last Apollo spacecraft launched to the mission Apollo-Soyuz . Another novelty of this program was the implementation of a system to meet and mate with another ship in lunar orbit, called Lunar Orbit Rendezvous or LOR ("Meeting of Lunar Orbit"), which was devised by John C. Houbolt , an aerospace engineer at NASA. Despite the risks involved in their use, the LOR allowed to replace the huge NASA rocket " NOVA "originally planned for these missions, leading to significant cost savings.
