They are most famous for launching the career of Peter Frampton. Band members Peter Frampton (vocals, guitar) - born Peter Kenneth Frampton, on 22 April 1950, at Stone Park Hospital, Beckenham, Kent. Andy Bown (keyboards) - born Andrew Steven Bown, on 27 March 1946, in The City, London. Gary Taylor (bass) - born Graham Taylor, on 28 November 1947, in Walton-on-Thames. Andrew Steele (drums) - born Andrew Roy Malcolm Steele, on 2 August 1941, in Hendon, North West London - died 18 April 2005, in Alaska, USA. Henry Spinetti (drums) - born Henry Anthony George Spinetti, on 31 March 1951, in Cwm, South Wales. Biography The record label Parlophone dropped them after several unsuccessful singles, and they subsequently signed to Fontana. Here songwriters Ken Howard and Alan Blaikley, who had been largely responsible for a string of hits by Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich, orchestrated for them a unique blend of pop and flower power. After a UK singles chart near-miss with "I Can Fly" (1967), the haunting "From The Underworld", based on the legend of Orpheus and Eurydice, reached Number 6 later that year with help from copious plays on pirate radio. It was followed by "Paradise Lost", which made it up to Number 15 in 1968. Their greatest success came with "I Don't Want Our Loving To Die", a Number 5 hit (also in 1968). With his boyish photogenic looks, Frampton was dubbed 'The Face of '68' by teen magazine "Rave". Steele then left the group, to be replaced by Henry Spinetti. Dissatisfied with mere teen idol status, and disappointed with the failure of their next single, "Sunshine Cottage", Frampton left to form Humble Pie with Steve Marriott. The remaining Bown and Spinetti made another flop single, "The Game", then formed the short-lived Judas Jump with Mike Smith and Allen Jones, saxophonists from Amen Corner, and Welsh vocalist Adrian Williams. Taylor, who became a disc jockey, and Steele, reunited briefly for a one-off single "You Got Me Hangin' From Your Lovin' Tree" in 1971, to almost universal disinterest. By the late 1970s, Andy Bown had become a member of the legendary UK rockers, Status Quo. (Less)
Peter Frampton gets his 'Frampton Comes Alive!'… GIBSON LES PAUL GUITAR FOUND ON CARIBBEAN ISLAND (More) GIBSON LES PAUL GUITAR FOUND ON CARIBBEAN ISLAND OF CURAÇAO
FRAMPTON CELEBRATES FRAMPTON COMES ALIVE! 35TH ANNIVERSARY WITH WORLD TOUR - On February 18 at the landmark Beacon Theater in New York City, Grammy winning guitarist Peter Frampton will play his restored 1954 Gibson Les Paul for the first time. His long-lost guitar was recently discovered on the Dutch Caribbean island of Curaçao after its disappearance in a plane crash 32 years ago. Frampton was reunited with the guitar in an emotional meeting in Nashville this past December. Now, with the help of the Gibson Guitar’s Custom Shop, Frampton will debut the recovered guitar during his NYC stop on his world tour celebrating the 35th anniversary of multi-platinum selling live album Frampton Comes Alive!. See Frampton’s reaction to the restoration of his cherished guitar here: http://www.frampton.com/press/guitar.html.
In 1980, a cargo plane carrying Frampton’s equipment for an upcoming show in Panama crashed, supposedly destroying all of the instruments on board including Frampton’s beloved guitar. The Curaçao Tourist Board helped acquire the guitar from an individual after hearing news that they may indeed have a lead on the long lost and beloved guitar. Together in Nashville at the Gibson Custom Shop, with experts from Gibson Guitar and Peter Frampton, the team confirmed it was the original guitar long missing from Frampton’s collection. Frampton’s custom guitar was given to him in 1970 by a man named Marc Mariana when Humble Pie played at the Fillmore West. Frampton borrowed Mariana’s guitar for the show and afterward tried to buy it from him, “But to my surprise he said he couldn't sell it to me—he wanted to give it to me!” he notes.
Frampton played the guitar exclusively on Humble Pie’s Rock On and Rocking the Fillmore albums. The guitar also appeared on a number of sessions for other artists including George Harrison, Jerry Lewis, Ringo Starr, Harry Nilsson, and John Entwistle. Most notably, Frampton played the guitar on the electrifying Frampton Comes Alive!, one of the top-selling live records of all time.
Frampton is ecstatic to have the guitar back and to play it once again. “It was given to me, taken away from me via a fiery plane crash, then given back to me 31 years later. To think that I would ever play this guitar again is beyond belief. After some repairs have now been finished at Gibson in Nashville, I will be able to play it on stage at the Beacon Theater, NYC Saturday, 18th Feb. It will be one of those days I won’t forget as long as I live.” http://frampton.com/news/ (Less)
