Costa Concordia Cruise Liner Ship Sinks Disaster -… Costa Concordia Cruise Liner Disaster.
On 13 (More) Costa Concordia Cruise Liner Disaster.
On 13 January 2012, the Costa Concordia ran aground and capsized on the western coast of Italy just off the shore of Isola del Giglio. There were approximately 4,200 people on board (3,229 passengers and 1,023 crew members).
Captain Francesco Schettino, 52, also known as Captain Coward, has been blamed for the disaster & is currently under house arrest.
After leaving the port of Civitavecchia at 9.30 pm (20:30 GMT), the Costa Concordia hit a rocky outcrop as it sailed past the island of Giglio.
On approaching the island of Giglio to perform a salute for a friend, the Captain made a mistake of turning too late and ended in shallow water where the liner hit a rocky outcrop.
As the ship took on water, the captain tried to turn it back towards the island's port, but the ship started to tilt and sink, eventually capsizing.
The abandon ship signal was given at 10.10pm. At 10:12pm, the coastguard called the crew after passengers contacted police on land to say the ship had experienced problems. In a recording of the conversation, the crew member can be heard saying: "We have a blackout and we are checking the conditions on board."
Most passengers escaped in lifeboats, but evacuation efforts were hampered by the angle of the tilting ship. The coastguard launched boats and helicopters to carry stranded passengers to safety.
The captain is reported to have left the ship in a lifeboat before all the passengers had been rescued. The Captain said he did not abandon the ship. He said he tripped during the panic on deck, and fell overboard into a lifeboat. According to the newspaper the Captain said:
''The passengers were pouring on to the decks, taking the lifeboats by assault,'' he said. ''I didn't even have a lifejacket because I had given it to one of the passengers. I was trying to get people to get into the boats in an orderly fashion. Suddenly, since the ship was at a 60-to-70-degree angle, I tripped and I ended up in one of the boats. ''
At 12:42am, a coastguard commander ordered the captain to get back on board. He did not, and went ashore.
The rescue continued over the weekend, with the ship's safety officer, Marrico Giampietroni, being discovered and evacuated with a broken leg at 12:00pm on Sunday.
Captain Francesco Schettino said the rocks were not marked on maps and were not detected by navigation systems. He later admitted making a navigational error, and told investigators he had "ordered the turn too late" as the ship sailed close to the island.
The ship's owners, Costa Cruises, said the captain had made an unauthorized deviation in course, sailing too close to the island in order to show the ship to locals.
Crew members of the Cruise Liner have said that the Captain was a playboy who likes to wine, dine & party with beautiful people; loved being treated like a celebrity on the 13-storey liner and strutted around as if the Liner was his own.
The captain of the Costa Concordia ordered dinner for himself and a woman after the ship struck rocks off Italy's coast said the Cruise's Cook.
On 25th January 2012, the number of deaths has reached 16, with 16 people still missing. The ship was capsized in shallow water off the coast, and at high risk of sinking into deeper waters. It was not known whether the ship would be recovered.
Accused of cowardice, Captain Francesco Schettino is currently under house arrest suspected of multiple manslaughter, causing a shipwreck and for abandoning ship. He faces charges of causing deaths and fleeing his ship before all the passengers were rescued.
The Captain had sailed close to Giglio to perform a 'salute' for a former Costa ship captain and for the family of the ship's head steward, both of whom had homes on the island.
New audiotape revealed that the Costa Concordia captain insisted that his cruise ship only had a blackout a full 30 minutes after it had rammed into rocks.
Captain said he did everything he could to get everyone of the ship & denying that he left the ship before many of the passengers & remaining members of the crew were the last the leave the ship.
Former Costa Concordia crew member Domnica Cemortan, who was on board the cruise ship, has said that the captain was not one of the first to leave the vessel.
A day after the disaster, the Captain told a friend that a manager had pressured him to sail too close to the shore which caused the disaster.
Captain Francesco Schettino's wife, Fabiola Russo, has defended her husband by saying that her husband had been unfairly made a scapegoat for the debacle.
She said: "I cannot think of any other naval or air tragedy in which the responsbile party was treated with such violence.... This is a manhunt, people are looking for a scapegoat, a monster. It's shameful."
She has insisted that her husband "was not a monster" but has admitted that once he had been fined for steering too close to the coast in the past. (Less)
Yemen & Urine: Meaningless Words Episode 24,… An Australian and a Californian discuss WikiLeaks (More) An Australian and a Californian discuss WikiLeaks for your infotainment. Today we were joined by Vietnam War Veteran Edward Dyer, and Musician Christopher Sisk. We discussed the incident caught on film of the USA Soldiers urinating on the dead bodies in Afghanistan, and whether or not artificial soldiers would be any better, and Edward provided a soldiers' perspective. We discussed war video games, post traumatic stress disorder, the high rate of suicide in war veterans, and the peril of reporting the truth of what happens on the ground during war. Fox "News" came up during that conversation.
We then looked at Al Qaeda presence in Yemen, following on from last weeks' discussion about the NDAA passing, where one of the reasons for it was because, until this bill passed, the US citizen who was vocal about traveling to Yemen to seek out terrorist training could not be picked up for it, but now he could be, hopefully before he shoots up a bunch of people in a mall. Cables discussed specifically were #09SANAA1963 and #10SANAA317.
We also looked at the SOPA/PIPA protest that was taking place today, and Christopher provided a musicians' perspective. Pamela sang a little bit too....sorry about that!!
Finally we discussed Playboy and Hugh Hefner as an activist, and how scary it is that television shows about murder are a dime a dozen, but a wee bit of nipple has to be shown after 9pm. (Less)
