After the death of North Korean leader Kim (More) After the death of North Korean leader Kim Jong-il, the story of his possible Russian birthplace is still a myth shrouded in secrecyAccording to official North Korean records, the national leader Kim Jong-il -- the son of the "great leader" Kim Il-Sung - was born in 1942 in Japanese-occupied Korea. The North Korean history books say his birth on a sacred mountain was followed by the appearance of two rainbows and a new star in the heavens. But the reality could be far more down to earth. The village of Vyatskoye is a few dozen miles away from Khabarovsk in Russia's Far East and, for a few years, it was the home of a joint Chinese-Korean guerrilla regiment fighting against Japan. "The Korean army regiment where Kim Il-Sung served used to be deployed here, along with the Red Army," says Olga Zotyeva, village resident. Before North Korea was established as a state - its future leader Kim Il-Sung also used to serve here as a captain of the Red Army. Anatoly Korovikov was born and has spent his whole life in Vyatskoye. He is one of the few living witnesses of those times. "I remember this camp, we weren't allowed to go there - but Chinese and Korean soldiers were free to walk anywhere they wanted. Some of them even got married here and some left - leaving three or four women pregnant," Korovikov says. Kim Il-Sung fled to the Soviet Union after his guerrilla team was crushed by the Japanese army in 1940. Five years later, the Second World War brought its results - Japan was defeated and pushed out of the Korean peninsula for the first time since 1910. Raised to a major of the Red Army, Kim Il-Sung was sent to Pyongyang to assist Soviet commandants working there. So, if he didn't leave Vyatskoye for around five years - it's unlikely Kim Jong-il was born somewhere else. All of this doesn't quite fit with the official North Korean story. And the archive bureau in Khabarovsk has only fueled the mystery around Kim Jong-Il's birth. "We have really looked into many different sources including the FSB, Interior Ministry and Civil Registry archives, searching for official proof that was Kim Jong-il was born in this region, of Vyatskoye village. But we haven't received official proof so far -- so far the response has been that this information is still confidential, secret that is, and only a narrow circle of persons has the access", says Yelena Dobryak, employee of Khabarovsk city administration. We may never find out the true story of Kim Jong-il's birth. And in Vyatskoye, a small cemetery that is the resting place of Korean and Chinese soldiers who died fighting for the regiment, take the true story with them. (Less)
