Magic Lantern HDR using Sony Vegas I wanted to share the workflow I have put together (More) I wanted to share the workflow I have put together to use HDR footage that I film using the HDR feature of Magic Lantern.
Split the footage on 2 tracks (one with the overexposed footage, the other with the underexposed footage), then blend the two tracks (keep the best part of both over and under exposed tracks).
Detailed steps :
1. Insert two copies of your clip on two video tracks, one on top of the other.
2. If the first frame is an underexposed frame, cut the first frame of the top track (as in the video). Otherwise, if the first frame is an overexposed frame, cut the first frame of the bottom track.
3. Right click on the clip and go to properties. Disable resample and set the playback rate to 2. Do this on both track. Trim both clips to the middle mark (the cursor should automatically snap to the triangle mark indicating the end of the clip). At this point the top track is now a continuously overexposed top track and an underexposed bottom track playing at 200% of original speed.
4. Add a chroma keyer effect to the top clip. Click the color box and set the color to white, or use the color picker and click on an overexposed area of the clip in the preview window. Set the blur amount and the low and high threshold to values that give you a good result.
5. Render. I suggest to render as .avi at this point. You will have a video playing at 200% speed.
6. Create a new project and put the .avi rendered clip in it. Slow it down (hold the CTRL key and drag the end of the clip) to the original speed, or if you have it and your are familiar with it, you can use Twixtor.
For best results, film at 60 fps so
The test footage was filmed with a Canon T3i (600D) with Magic Lantern version 2.3.
The editing was done in Sony Vegas Pro 11. (Less)
