EL Saturn Research # 66 - Interessting (More) EL Saturn Research # 66 - Interessting Episode... -------------------------------------------------------------------- "The God Gambit" is another "departure" episode for the Transformers series -- Instead of the typical present-day Earth-based plot that we have seen thus far, we're transporter to another place entirely: outer space. The story is also rather fantasy-based (well, moreso than usual) but it does provide an interesting commentary about RELIGION and REASON. The episode begins with Cosmos being hunted down by Astrotrain (who is also carrying Starscream and Thrust). Cosmos is shot down over Titan -- the moon of Saturn -- which is inhabited by a race of humanoids who worship the "sky gods" (which look suspiciously like Transformers). After a woman confronts the leader about the worship of false ideology, Cosmos crash lands nearby, cementing in the minds of (at least most) of the local inhabitants, that the sky gods are real. When Astrotrain, Starscream and Thrust arrive, they exploit that ideology in order to plunder the moon of its energy crystals. On the surface, the dynamic between Astrotrain and Starscream is highly amusing. Starscream, who for so long aspired to command the Decepticons, is relegated to Astrotrain's subordinate. He is, essentially, cowed by Astrotrain's superior strength. It certainly reveals Starscream's character to be one which, while he wants to be the most powerful, is rather insecure. The religious angle is confronted by the local woman who proclaims that reason and rationality are preferable to blind faith -- a faith that is often exploited by mortals for power and wealth (the exact circumstances on Titan). It's all true, but it does ignore the spiritual void that religion often fills for a lot of people. The rest of the episode is filled with action-based scenes (a surprise, I know) in which the Autobots attempt to rescue Cosmos and save Titan from the Decepticons. To do this, Optimus Prime dispatches Omega Supreme, Perceptor and Jazz to the moon of Saturn. And this represents another departure for the series: focusing in on just a handful of characters, rather than trying to fit all of the characters in somewhere, somehow. And it works. While you may miss a healthy dose of Ironhide or Wheeljack, or even Megatron who doesn't even appear in the episode, it means that those who do appear are given much more room to act. In the end, of course, the Decepticons are vanquished and the Autobots save the day. It's a satisfying ending, in part, because we were able to focus on the characters so much throughout the action. And, too, the additional layering of false worship helps create a stronger foundation for "The God Gambit."
