Toetsenist Mick Talbot had reeds in verschillende groepen ervaring opgedaan, zoals Merton Parkas, Dexys Midnight Runners en Bureau. In het begin van de jaren '80 heft Paul Weller The Jam op ten faveure van The Style Council. De punks van het eerste uur haakten al snel af, want The Style Council was totaal andere koek dan The Jam. De verschuiving richting soul, funk en jazz zat er de laatste jaren bij The Jam natuurlijk al lang aan te komen, maar met The Style Council kon Weller alle gene laten varen en volop in de richting gaan die hij naar zijn muzikale overtuiging in moest slaan. Weller blijkt in staat ultra-funky dingen te maken zoals 'Money Go Around', maar ook warmbloedige soulvolle popsongs als 'My Ever Changing Moods' en bijna klassieke ballads als 'You're The Best Thing'. ook 'shout to the top' deed het bijzonder goed!
