2009 Grammy Auction (Lot 88) The 51st Grammy Auction: Lot 88 David Bowie Played (More) The 51st Grammy Auction: Lot 88 David Bowie Played Guitar
Gibson L4 custom studio and stage played guitar (serial number 82377535). Played by Bowie while on tour with Tin Machine. Comes with tour program, letter of authenticity and guitar picks.
The guitar can be seen in videos for the "Tin Machine" album. Was heavily used in the recording of "Tin Machine II." Tin Machine was formed in 1989, a return to the collaborative band setting for Bowie, who had been a solo artist since the 1970s. The quartet was comprised of Bowie, Reeves Gabrels, and brothers Tony and Hunt Sales. By some accounts, the group challenged Bowie to be more spontaneous, with fewer takes and less production put into the music making. Bowie was said to have taken inspiration from a favorite band (Pixies) to contribute to the edgy rock sound of Tin Machine.
