the police-synchronicity II The Police is een popgroep die bestond uit drie (More) The Police is een popgroep die bestond uit drie leden: Sting, Stewart Copeland en Andy Summers. Zij boekte haar grootste successen in de jaren tachtig en is officieel nooit uit elkaar gegaan. Stewart Copeland wilde een nieuwe groep oprichten en had daarvoor al een naam: 'The Police'. Hij had Sting reeds aan het werk gezien en dacht aan hem om in zijn nieuwe groep te spelen. De derde persoon werd Henri Padovani, een 24-jarige Corsicaan. Samen brachten ze op 12 februari 1977 de eerste single van The Police uit: 'Fall Out'. Hun carrire kwam echter niet van de grond. Toen producer en tevens bassist Mike Howlett Sting uitnodigde om in zijn nieuwe groep Strontium 90 mee te spelen, zag het ernaar uit, dat dit het einde van The Police zou betekenen. Maar toen Howletts drummer op het laatste moment afhaakte, nam Stewart zijn plaats in. Bij een repetitie werden ze voorgesteld aan Andy Summers, destijds de leadgitarist bij Mike Howlett. Zowel Stewart als Sting wilden Andy bij de groep, maar Andy wilde dat ze eerst Henri ontsloegen. Na enkele optredens met hun vieren werd de knoop doorgehakt en Henri werd ontslagen. Hun livedebuut was op 18 augustus 1977 in de Rebecca's club in Birmingham. In 1979 staat de band op Pinkpop tijdens hun zomertournee langs diverse festivals. De bandleden beschouwen dit optreden als bepalend voor de rest van hun carriere. Daarna kwam hun groep echt van de grond met klassiekers als So lonely, Roxanne, Can't stand losing you, Message in a bottle, Walking on the moon, Don't stand so close to me, De Do Do Do De Da Da Da, Every little thing she does is magic, Spirits in the material world, Every breath you take, King of pain en vele andere. In 1985 viel de groep uiteen na ruzies. Officieel is de groep nooit uit elkaar gegaan, maar was er sprake van een ingelaste pauze voor solo-projecten van de bandleden. (Less)
