Making computer games is a dream job for many children but now it can easily become a reality. Queensland is the new capital of computer game manufacturing - one of a number of booming professions taking hold in Brisbane. In their office at Spring Hill staff at THQ Studio are busy making their latest game for Nickelodeon. Just by sheer weight of numbers Brisbane is the epicentre of development in Australia. Each game takes more than 12 months to produce. They've done SpongeBob. We have a lot of people here who are so happy every day - "Oh, God, I work in games - how cool is that?" And there are plenty of jobs if you're passionate and creative. They've tripled their workforce here in three years. Get a degree, study - there's so many different elements you need to draw on. you need that basic grounding. Who would have thought this would ever be classed as work? Salaries start at around $40,000 a year. I think that's the tricky part - letting the parents know there is actually a long term career in making games. You just wouldn't have been taken seriously a few years ago. The computer game industry now is actually bigger than the Hollywood box office. Computer games and aviation are the two new boom industries in Brisbane but because of the skills shortage there are plenty of other professions where bosses are screaming out for good staff. With South East Queensland motoring ahead there are plenty of opportunities in property and construction. We've got bridges, we've got tunnels, we've got infrastructure projects everywhere. Civil engineering is classed as 'red hot' for jobs as well as mining, accounting, education and health. Graduate engineers - particularly in the mining sector - Salaries in Queensland jumped 6% in the last year - well ahead of the national average. That's usually the conundrum surrounding video games as they try to become movies. And the beloved stealth action video game Metal Gear Solid is no different...until now...welll maybe. Sony confirms development is actually underway on the Metal Gear movie with Spider-Man producer Avi Arad attached to produce.The former chairman and CEO of Marvel Studios, Avid Arad is no stranger to the world of spandexed crimefighters with classic comic book adaptations like Sam Raimi's spider-man trilogy and X-Men under his belt. But his track record definitely gets a little spotty with releases like The Fantastic Four and Elektra. Most recently Arad produced Marc Webb's take on scrawny Peter Parker, The Amazing Spider-Man which has scored a solid $700 mill at the worldwide box office...plenty to justify two sequels which he will also produce. But judging from the big Metal Gear solid movie announcement at the game's anniversary event in Tokyo, Arad wants to use this flick to segue into game-centric cinema. Arad assured Metal Gear fans he'll do Snake justice saying "For many years I fought to bring comics to theaters. Comic books are now the biggest genre in cinema, and video games are the comic books of today... We will take our time and tell the story with all the nuances, ideology, cautionary tales needed." And for even more assurance...with Metal Gear's creator Hideo Kojima on track to E-P, the integrity of the franchise should...I repeat... SHOULD remain intact.As far as games go, Metal Gear solid is as cinematic and immersive as it gets. The franchise follows rambo-esque solider Snake as he rids the world of various nuclear and robotic threats..and the game first debuted on the playstation in 1998 from developer Konami. This isn't the first time Hollywood has attempted to make it a movie. Back in 2008 Christian Bale was rumored for the lead role of Snake and The Social Network's Michael De Luca was among the names to produce. But by 2010, the project fizzled out and hasn't been resurrected until now. In addition to the Metal Gear Solid film, Arad is also developing big screen versions of the widely popular Mass Effect and Uncharted franchises....let's just hope that his conclusion on the Mass Effect universe is better than Bioware's. Oops! I said it! Well I'm hopeful Michael Fassbender starring as Ezio in Assassin's Creed will result in a killer adaptation of that franchise and inspire more game movies.
