That's usually the conundrum surrounding video games as they try to become movies. And the beloved stealth action video game Metal Gear Solid is no different...until now...welll maybe. Sony confirms development is actually underway on the Metal Gear movie with Spider-Man producer Avi Arad attached to produce.The former chairman and CEO of Marvel Studios, Avid Arad is no stranger to the world of spandexed crimefighters with classic comic book adaptations like Sam Raimi's spider-man trilogy and X-Men under his belt. But his track record definitely gets a little spotty with releases like The Fantastic Four and Elektra. Most recently Arad produced Marc Webb's take on scrawny Peter Parker, The Amazing Spider-Man which has scored a solid $700 mill at the worldwide box office...plenty to justify two sequels which he will also produce. But judging from the big Metal Gear solid movie announcement at the game's anniversary event in Tokyo, Arad wants to use this flick to segue into game-centric cinema. Arad assured Metal Gear fans he'll do Snake justice saying "For many years I fought to bring comics to theaters. Comic books are now the biggest genre in cinema, and video games are the comic books of today... We will take our time and tell the story with all the nuances, ideology, cautionary tales needed." And for even more assurance...with Metal Gear's creator Hideo Kojima on track to E-P, the integrity of the franchise should...I repeat... SHOULD remain intact.As far as games go, Metal Gear solid is as cinematic and immersive as it gets. The franchise follows rambo-esque solider Snake as he rids the world of various nuclear and robotic threats..and the game first debuted on the playstation in 1998 from developer Konami. This isn't the first time Hollywood has attempted to make it a movie. Back in 2008 Christian Bale was rumored for the lead role of Snake and The Social Network's Michael De Luca was among the names to produce. But by 2010, the project fizzled out and hasn't been resurrected until now. In addition to the Metal Gear Solid film, Arad is also developing big screen versions of the widely popular Mass Effect and Uncharted franchises....let's just hope that his conclusion on the Mass Effect universe is better than Bioware's. Oops! I said it! Well I'm hopeful Michael Fassbender starring as Ezio in Assassin's Creed will result in a killer adaptation of that franchise and inspire more game movies. With a script by Sly himself there's sure to be plenty of action, and director Gary Fleder, best known for helming psychological crime thrillers, seems like a good fit for the subject matter. Now Variety has announced that James Franco will join the mix as none other than -- you guessed it -- the drug dealer.Of course, this won't be the lovable-pothead-James we're used to seeing, but "an evil meth magnate" who threatens the hero's family. Luckily Franco is an actor known for his range, and we've seen him do the evil thing before as the "Green Goblin Jr." in Sam Raimi's Spiderman trilogy. Executive producer Avi Lerner is very optimistic about the quality of the film's talent, saying quote, "I cannot think of a better group to put this film on the big screen."Do you guys agree?
