Folsom Prison Blues (Johnny Cash cover) This popular song by American country music (More) This popular song by American country music singer, Johnny Cash, combines two traditional folk genres, the train song and the prison song, which Cash continued to use throughout his career. It was the eleventh track on his debut album, "With His Hot and Blue Guitar" and was also included on "All Aboard the Blue Train".
Cash was inspired to write this song after watching the 1951 movie, "Inside the Walls of Folsom Prison", while serving in West Germany in the US Air Force. He explained that the "Reno" line came about as he "sat with my pen in my hand, trying to think up the worst reason a person could have for killing another person, and that's what came to mind."
The melody and many of the lyrics came from the song "Crescent City Blues" from Gordon Jenkins' 1953 album, "Seven Dreams". Jenkins was not credited on the original record, but after the song became popular in the early 1970s, Cash paid Jenkins a settlement of about $75,000.
Cash performed the song at Folsom Prison itself on January 13, 1968, and this version was released on the "At Folsom Prison" album the same year. The cheering from the audience following the "Reno" line was apparently added in post-production. The prisoners were careful not to cheer at any of Cash's comments about the prison itself, fearing reprisal from guards. This live version of the song was placed at number 8 on Pitchfork Media's list of "The 200 Greatest Songs of the 1960s".
Several artists have covered this song, including Bob Dylan (1967), Merle Haggard (1968), Waylon Jennings (1968), Lester Flatt (1971) and Jerry Lee Lewis (1981).
