This is a short video illustrating the versatility (More) This is a short video illustrating the versatility of the Delkin WingMan 1080 HD compact video camera.... it's very similar to the GoPro and other compact video cameras which are promoted as shooting 1080 resolution video at very high quality. I was offered this camera to test it above water and underwater - it is marketed in Australia by CR Kennedy, distributors of Pentax and Hassleblad, and others... The WingMan HD does have many good points but then some not so good points too. Here's some of the good things I noticed while playing with it underwater and above... NOTE: The date on the above water footage shows 2011, I hadn't altered the date when I shot this footage - it was actually filmed in early May 2012. Good Points - - You can shoot video or stills within a second of each other, no need to alter the camera in between. - Good depth of field and great colour above water - Colours Not so good under water but I expect it would be better if the water was tropical or just clearer and you had more sunlight. - Good battery life overall - manufacturer says it will last 2 hours - about 45 mins for me so far! - Nice sharp still images above water - not so good under water but once reduced or cropped from the original you can get quite good stills to 6x8 or 8x12 inches. - In the housing, if not used it will go to sleep in 2 minutes, saving battery power and can be relaunched by pressing either the still or video button - Has 3x Zoom - Built in LCD screen - Comes complete with an 8gb Micro SD card which slips into a SD Holder for insertion into a big screen TV slot, a Laptop computer or a Flash Drive. Bad Points... - Has to be turned on before it goes in the housing - Zoom doesn't work once in the housing - Noticeable digital noise on Video and Stills - underwater was worse but I imagine in nice light, lots of sunlight and good water clarity the end result would be much better! - In poor visibility don't expect much from this system - it just won't do what a GoPro can do but then again it is only half the price! - No Flash - LCD screen is very small compared to the GoPro and is quite hard to see in sunlight Overall; I love the ability to shoot stills and video so quickly... imagine you are filming a humpback whale, shooting video one second then stills the next - that's what I call versatile... so overall if you have lots of sunlight, good water clarity and calm conditions the WingMan WILL actually do a damn good job and you'll get some very good quality still photos up to about 8x12 inches plus very nice full HD video. Honestly, this little camera won't do as well as a GoPro but it is a lot cheaper. Overall it's a nice piece of equipment, as long as you don't expect too much of it - for a family holiday it will do far better than most compact digital cameras, has a great wide angle video capability and a nice 8mp still camera. I can see in a few years this sort of camera taking over from the larger compact digital systems but like the WingMan HD it will be very light, extremely compact and amazingly versatile... and the quality of video and stills will just get better and better!
