Lovely Day - Bill Withers (1977) "Lovely Day" is the title of a popular song from (More) "Lovely Day" is the title of a popular song from 1977 by the American soul and R&B singer Bill Withers. The song was written by Withers and Skip Scarborough and appears on Withers' 1978 album "Menagerie". Released as a single in late 1977, "Lovely Day" peaked at #6 on the Billboard R&B chart and at #30 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the US in early 1978. Producer Clarence McDonald also arranged the original 1977 version of the song and played keyboards. Guitars were played by Ray Parker, Jr., Jerry Knight played bass, and Russell Kunkel played drums. Towards the end of the song, Withers holds a note for 18 seconds. Bill Withers - Ain't No Sunshine Withers was de jongste van zes kinderen. Withers (More) Withers was de jongste van zes kinderen. Withers vader (William Harrison Withers, Sr.) werkte in de kolenmijnen van Slab Fork en was tevens voorganger in de baptistengemeente; zijn moeder (Mattie Rose Galloway) was toen ze hem trouwde een weduwe en moeder van vier kinderen. Withers groeide op in een huis van de Slab Fork Coal Company (het bedrijf waar zijn vader werkte). In oktober 1941 gingen zijn ouders apart wonen, en in mei 1942 scheidden ze officieel. Bill ging in 1941 bij zijn tante Carrella Galloway Briggs wonen en in 1944 ging hij weer terug naar zijn moeder, die ondertussen in Beckley, West Virginia woonde. Hij ging hier naar de openbare East Park Elementary School en daarna naar de Stratton Junior High School. Withers kreeg een bijzondere band met zijn oma Lula Carter Galloway die tot haar dood in 1953 bij de familie in huis leefde.
