Divide Creek Seep 2008 -- biofilm and bacteria in… This footage shows the nasty biofilm and some (More) This footage shows the nasty biofilm and some iron-reducing (orange) microbial growth associated with the seep discovered in 2008. There are much better pictures of the orange gunk online at the site given below. As you can see, it bears many of the same visual characteristics of the seep in 2004 (which continues).
About halfway through the video I captured a swipe of the biofilm from where it is flowing under the rock. You can see the water continuing to flow from the rock afterward. This seep occurred with an sudden upwelling of ground water.
And this is only one aspect of the seep. There was oily-looking black stuff bubbling out of the ground that turned out to be oil-related hydrocarbons (the kind usually associated with an oil spill). Those videos are here on YouTube also.
The Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission keeps telling us that the biofilm and proliferation of orange bacteria is "normal". It is not normal in our environment. Yes, it may be latently present and even exist in non-visible moderate colonies but the only time we've ever seen it full-on flourish is in association with a natural gas well blow out. Which is why we are so very concerned for the ground water here that we drink.
The COGCC also tells us that this biofilm is common in stagnant areas. This video shows that this biofilm is not in a stagnant pond. It is on a bank and it is being fed by an underground source that suddenly emerged.
The COGCC sampled six vials from this location earlier the same day, and they came back with no BETX (like benzene) detected. That's not surprising though given that the surface waters of the "main seep" area have also not shown BTEX -- though benzene has been found in the ground water very nearby an area that looks (on video shot the same day at that location) just like this.

In April, 2004, this region was the focus of a massive natural gas well blow-out that released an estimated (and acknowledged) 115 million cubic feet of natural gas into the environment.
EnCana Oil and Gas, USA was found by the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission to have been responsible for this devastating event.
Despite that and despite that the seep is ongoing, and despite us have found a new seep on June 28, 2008, the COGCC continues to allow drilling of this extremely fragile area by the same operator who caused the seep in 2004. And, as of this post (08-06-08) the COGCC (same supervisor in charge of that and this investigation) continues to minimize the full scope of the new seep through a failure to fully investigate. They will not even test the ground water which we drink.
EnCana stands to make 6 billion from drilling and fracing this area, and the absence of inquiry helps ensure they get to keep on pursuing it without adequate protection for the environment or the people who live here.
