Calique - Rescue 100 A quick video of some of Calique's current training sessions. A year ago he was rescued by a (More) A quick video of some of Calique's current training sessions. A year ago he was rescued by a group called Rescue 100 after a herd of over 100 horses was seized by the ASPCA. Unfortunately, before they arrived, 27 horses had already perished from the horrible conditions. Calique was skinny, filled with parasites and lacked even the most basic care.
After volunteering with the Rescue 100 group in the rehabbing of some of these horses, I decided to adopt Calique. He was a difficult case, as the previous owner had worked with him. Cali is a very sensitive horse, but the treatment he recieved did not take this into account. When he arrived at his new home, I couldn't even touch him. As time went on, I managed to touch him more and more, but he still trembled as I did. If I were to raise my hand, he would cower and shake.
It's been nearly a year since he was removed from those conditions, and as you can see, he is improving by leaps and bounds. This was only his second time with a bridle on, but as you can see, he takes to it quite well. Normally he runs with his head in an upright manner, with a hollow back and choppy stride. With this new bit (an eggbutt jointed snaffle), he drops his head and starts seeking contact.
He has certainly gained the weight back from being so skinny just a year before, and now we are working on his muscle tone to help get him to a healthier weight range. We will likely start working towards riding in the next few months. Already he is in love with his western saddle, so it should be a really wonderful experience. And yes, he does love his western saddle, haha. His lip wiggles when I bring it out, just like it does when he knows I have cookies.
Calique is definately the love of my life.

Horse rescues are working hard every day to help equines in need. They do this through a variety of means. However, horses are an expensive animal to keep and many rescues benefit from public donations. I advise that if you are going to donate to a rescue, fully research their history. Obtaining a rescue license is very simple and has no follow-through, so some people have been caught posing as rescues and then stealing money from generous people like yourself. So please, if you want to help horses, do your research before donating money to the cause. In this way, we can ensure that those donations go towards good, honest and hard-working rescues rather than people who are just looking to make a quick buck at the expensive of the public's heartstrings.
