recorded 10 May 1945
issued in 1945 as National 6001
Born 8 November 1913, Arnold Dwight Moore sang with Bennie Moten, formed a vocal quartet called The Four Sharps, and toured with Ida Cox's Darktown Scandles before he was 20 years old. Soon, the Topeka, KS native was going by the name Gatemouth Moore, thanks to a woman shouting his nom-du-stage at the Club 81 in Atlanta, GA. Moore was famous for his sharp dress, elegant manner, and clear enunciation.
In the summer of 1939, he was hired by Walter Barnes and was one of only three members of his Royal Creolians to survive the Rhythm Club fire of 23 April 1940. As his luck would have it, he was "busy" with a willing female on their tour bus.
He wasn't heard on record til 1945. Between May 1945 and December 1947, he recorded three sessions, produced by Herb Abramson, for National and three sessions for King.
Then, in January 1949, Arnold Dwight "Gatemouth" Moore was one the stage at Chicago's Club DeLisa singing with Red Saunder's band. After winning a big crap game, they played his intorduction, he came on stage and started to sing. . .nothing. They played it again. . .nothing. Finally, the piano player played an arpeggio. He sang one song.
"Shine on me. Shine on me.
Let the Light from the lighthouse shine on me.
Shine on me. Shine on me.
Let the Light from the lighthouse shine on me.
I heard the voice of Jesus say,
'Come unto to Me and rest.
Lay down thou weary one lay down
Thy head upon My breast.'"
He left the bandstand that Saturday night and met with Rev. Clarence Cobb, went to church that next day, and was enrolled at Moody's Bible Institute on Monday morning!
The "old" Gatemouth would do one more session with Johnny Otis in 1977 but, the "new" Rev. A. D. Moore became a disc jockey on Memphis' WDIA and Birmingham's WEDR. He recorded gospel for the Chess brothers, Coral, Audio Fidelity, and Bluesway. He would officiate churches in Chicago and Clarksdale before, finally, calling Yazoo City, MS home.
Arnold Dwight "Gatemouth" Moore, in his 90th year, went home to Jesus, 18 May 2004.

The Phuket Yacht Club at the picturesque Ao Yon Bay near Cape Panwa on the south west side of Phuket, held their Open Day last Sunday the 30th of September, and despite the heavy rain quite a few residents, members, and visitors, both foreign and Thai, turned up to watch and join in an informal and fun program of small dinghy sailing, canoe racing and especially international dragon boat racing, being held for the first time ever in Phuket.
We arrived as they were holding some short kayak or canoe races for several active kids, including Maxine, Lilo and Emma here who didn't mind get wet and splashed in the rain and sea:
"How many ... stick to canoeing."
During the rain break, Bill Smith, secretary of the club, explained some of the club's activities and so-called adoption of sailing dinghies scheme, to attract more sponsors and provide a stable financial support for this small but long established club.
Then Mike Downard, from sponsors Sail in Asia showed the first two groups of willing oarsmen and women, some tips on how to row or stick their oars in, at the same time and rhythm for the dragon boats.
Once they learnt the basics it was time to push their boats out and hit the water;
We went on board to experience the thrill and speed of these first timers:
together with the young drummers, keeping the beat in rhythm with the crew
"Racing any second now.... Drum drum"
They lined up for a couple of short races and did remarkably well to keep them in a straight line without crashing into each other.
After the races, one of the crews practiced a capsizing to know how to act in an emergency:
After they pulled in to shore we spoke to oarsman, and environmentalist Marco Reinhard, who recently cycled and canoed all round Phuket, and to Mike about this first outing for the crews: "Well I think today went well... sorry to get you wet."
Mike is willing to train and help crews form for proper races at PIMEX boat show on Sunday December 9th:
"We've got about 10 weeks .. that's all that's involved."
For more details on how to join or form dragon boat teams see www.phuketdragonboat.com or telephone Mike on 087 2810458.
While everyone was recharging their energy with a hearty BBQ and refreshments, we asked Katy Gooch, Sailing Secretary, more about the club's regular sailing activities in the next few months: "We're hoping the Open Day ... we've got good wind most of the year."
