"Everything is Ragtime Now" played by Sullivans & Drivons ...or "The Heebee Jeebees" -- take your pick.
There's quite a few ragtime songs (More) ...or "The Heebee Jeebees" -- take your pick.
There's quite a few ragtime songs that are about the popularity of ragtime itself despite the best efforts of "polite" society to ban it or convince people that it was detrimental to their health (doctors even wrote this!). This one from 1913 features music by Charley Straight who would later become a well-known composer of the Novelty Ragtime style. Lyrics are by J. Brandon Walsh.
Bub forgets the words a little bit here; he had just arrived, 15 minutes late to this first set, having gotten lost on the new bypass that diverts Highway 49 away from old town Sutter Creek (same thing happened to me!), so perhaps he was still a little flustered.
But it's a fun performance either way, isn't it?
Petra Sullivan, piano
Bub Sullivan, vocals
Robyn Drivon, tuba
Steve Drivon, drums
Recorded Saturday 11 August 2007 during the 9th annual Sutter Creek Ragtime Festival.
The lyrics as sung here are slightly different than the original publication, as they have elected to avoid using the word "coon". The term "coon" actually was nothing more than a black version of today's "redneck". Just as "redneck" does not apply to all white people, so "coon" did not apply to all black people. But people are hyper-sensitive these days (the Raspberry Jam Band was compelled to change a line "In the time of Old Black Joe" to "In the time of Old Man Joe" because someone was offended -- never mind that it's a reference to a song title!).
Anyway, here are the original lyrics:
(First verse)
A well-known music master
Last week became insane.
He heard so many rag-time tunes,
They turned this poor man's brain.
The classics are forgotten
All over this broad land.
For you hear songs 'bout Casey Jones
And Alexander's rag-time band.
The tender lover croons
No song of honeymoons.
Instead, he sings some rag-time songs
About some rag-time coons.
(chorus)
You hear rag-time songs sung by rag-time coons,
And rag-time pianos playing rag-time tunes.
You see rag-time soldiers marching down the street,
And rag-time butchers eating rag-time meat.
You see rag-time sailors sailing rag-time seas,
And rag-time Dutchmen eating rag-time cheese.
I saw a rag-time milk-maid milk a rag-time cow,
Ev'rything is rag-time,
Syncopated jag time,
Ev'rything is rag-time now.
(Second verse)
It's rag-time at the altar,
And rag-time while you shave.
This country now is flooded
With a raggy rag-time wave.
Grand opera is rag-time,
The rag-time singers sing.
They even sing in rag-time now
The song "God Save the King".
We all sing rag-time airs;
We all swear rag-time swears.
And when we dance, we try and prance
Around like grizzly bears.
[repeat chorus] (Less)
