Watching day 2 of i-ACT today I realized, more then ever, how powerful and moving these personal connections are. Being able to follow Katie-Jay and Gabriel these last few days on the web, as they bring us the names, faces, and stories of people who have experienced more hardship then I could have ever even imagined possible, continues to inspire and motivate me more each day.
Yesterday, seeing the warmth and kindness of people like Jacob, the school inspector who so generously welcomed our two team members back to Camp Kounoungo, and today being able to see his family and beautiful, brand new baby girl brings a much deeper sense of compassion, as well as understanding. Seeing this allowed me to realize that Jacob's family is no different then mine or your family, except for the fact that Jacob's family needs us to do anything we can to ensure their survival and return to their homes in a safe Darfur.
UN Secretary, General Ban Ki-moon has spent the past few months asking governments in every potential helicopter contributing country to lend aircraft for a prospective peacekeeping mission in Sudan's Darfur region. However, this attempt to gain only 24 helicopters, from countries that most certainly have aircrafts to spare, has not been a success as these countries have failed to contribute. Recently, France has stepped up and offered to give an additional five helicopters for the peacekeeping mission, but this is not nearly enough to ensure success in a mission that could bring peace to Darfur.
