God Bless Broken Road (R.Flatts) Sign Language Collaboration HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY! A fabulous musician, Ricky Shades, asked me if he could use my first (More) HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY! A fabulous musician, Ricky Shades, asked me if he could use my first version of this video as a Valentine's Day collaboration. I have wanted to improve the signing (on most of my videos, actually), so he graciously gave me the chance to do that first. Therefore, this is the 2nd version of this phenomenal song for me, now combined with Ricky's talented skills and improvisation. Please show your support to this fabulous man by visiting his channel at: http://youtube.com/RickyShades MUSIC: The background music was performed on a Godin Multiac Synth guitar using one of the Roland module's "strings" setting. No pre-recorded tracks were used, and no tracks added afterwards, with the exception of my video. My story: To begin, I chose my YT name so that my friend could find it easily -- & I could remember it! It just made sense. However, now that it's found it's way to over 29,000 people, I don't like that it sounds like I'm an expert selling something. I am neither. I cannot change the name or I lose the videos, as well as the great, supportive comments I've received. I am not deaf. I was inspired to learn from my cousin & my ASL instructor, both of whom are deaf, as well as from a friend's child. I am not an interpreter, although that may be a route I chose someday when my children are older. I have a long way to go to become even close to fluent in ASL, so I admire those that are. I also took classes to learn Signed Exact English (S.E.E.) as some schools here use SEE to teach young children who are also learning to read. Signing here is not enough practice versus having real conversations with someone who is deaf; that is the best way to learn. I started signing to songs with my daughter for fun, then did my friend's fav song for her birthday ("My Wish"). My email couldn't handle the video, so I popped it up here. I never intended, nor imagined, that it would start getting thousands of hits and people would start requesting that I try their fav songs. I would have redone that video ASL appropriate if I had known! I will someday, but for now, I keep it here because I did it with my friend in mind, not the 29,000 other people :-) Songs are difficult to translate into straight ASL, as ASL is not in English word order - so kudos to those that can do it! I'm always trying to improve my ASL sign, but am using Pidgin Signed English (PSE) here. Definition of PSE: "Culturally Deaf people, signing with each other, usually use ASL, but many people, (frequently deaf or hard-of-hearing) who learn to sign later in life, after hearing and using spoken English, do not sign strictly in ASL. Instead, they use a mixture of ASL and English that is known as PSE...Culturally Deaf people are usually very adept at understanding and using this blend of English and ASL when they sign with someone who doesn't strictly use ASL." Thus the reason I have such great comments from people who are hearing, hard-of-hearing, and those that are deaf. It makes sense to the children I teach as well since PSE and SEE are in English word order. I know I can't please everyone, so all I can say is that I am making the effort to communicate on all levels, in a way that I truly enjoy. All I know is what I am reading from all of you: people who were touched to see a beautiful visual aspect put to their special song. That it helped express their love, or let go of one; deal with the loss of a grandparent, a friend; recall their faith; start a new life; their wedding song; courageously battle disease as they fight for their life; bravely fight to protect ours... Countless people asking how & where they can learn ASL. These are the reasons I'm doing this, and will continue...Thank you so much for the support. Rascal Flatts - Bless The Broken Road Lyrics
www.rascalflatts.com
I set out on a narrow way many years ago
Hoping I would find true love along the broken road
But I got lost a time or two
Wiped my brow and kept pushing through
I couldn't see how every sign pointed straight to you
Every long lost dream lead me to where you are
Others who broke my heart they were like northern stars
Pointing me on my way into your loving arms
This much I know is true
That God blessed the broken road
That led me straight to you
I think about the years I spent just passing through
I'd like to have the time I lost and give it back to you
But you just smile and take my hand
You've been there you understand
It's all part of a grander plan that is coming true
Every long lost dream lead me to where you are
Others who broke my heart they were like northern stars
Pointing me on my way into your loving arms
This much I know is true
That God blessed the broken road
That led me straight to you (Less)
