THESIS QUESTION: How can a media representation of music and dance inspire an architecture that facilitates education, awareness, and self-reliance in disconnected areas of the world? PREMISE: The music industry spends millions of dollars on the production of music videos, but few express an artist's concern for a social problem. Celebrities have the ability to use their influential status in pop culture to spread awareness for causes they support. Generating awareness is only half the battle; the catalyst for sustainable change lies within service organizations whose missions are centered on long-term solutions. Education is the key to a long-term solution and the key for self-sustainability. A media representation, such as a music video, has the power to be an educational tool for both the creator and the viewer. ABSTRACT: Africa is often simply viewed as the place of extreme poverty and AIDS. Embedded within all these struggles are rich cultures that are slowly disintegrating. Music and dance are part of almost every culture around the world. As a representation of pop culture, music videos join sound with visual representations inspired by pieces of music. Documenting and sharing artistic culture with an international audience, through a partnering service organization, can create awareness and the economic means for an underdeveloped African village to become self-reliant. Many organizations whose mission is to aid Africa, offer temporary fixes rather than long-term solutions. There must be a way for an African village, such as Pommern, Tanzania, to sustain itself in the long run. With a facility that creates a way for the people of Pommern to showcase their artistic culture to the rest of the world through a marketable and artistic media form, perhaps the village can become self-reliant and economically viable.
