Presuppositionalists insist that reason and sense experience can only be reliable if they find their (More) Presuppositionalists insist that reason and sense experience can only be reliable if they find their ground in the biblical god, that God is the only adequate foundation for these things. This is one of the many ways they undermine their own position, here i'll explain how. Presuppositionalists like to tell us that there can be no neutral ground between a christian and an atheist in a discussion, this move tries to obscure the fact that we are all born i a state of implicit atheism, and in life we are presented with truth claims and choose whether or not to accept them. Generally we need to accept a certain set of truth claims in order to become Christians. Implicit atheism is the neutral ground presuppositionalists will tell you does not exist. After becoming a Christian, some people like to invoke radical skepticism to undermine reason and knowledge, the things that enabled him to accept their religion in the first place. Like delusional vandals setting fire to their own home They imagine that they are immune from the flames. The presuppositionalist claims that Christianity dispels radical skepticism. How strange then that he was able to use precisely this untrustworthy, non-Christian, reason and sense experience in order to accept Christianity in the first place. If he were to take seriously his own claim that there can be no grounds from which to trust human experience without Christianity then he would be forced to admit that his Christianity is based on a foundation of sand. At best the presup apologetic paints acceptance of Christianity as a kind of wishful thinking, accepting a claim because of the perceived negative ramification of not accepting it: 'If I don't accept Christianity then i can't trust my senses, I want to be able to trust my senses, so I'll accept Christianity' Of course these are not thoughts that cross anyones mind when they are converting to Christianity. But we're talking about the logical consequences of presup apologetics in an idealised example. and how they relate to the initial acceptance of Christianity. By his own lights, While he was an atheist, the presuppositionalist he had no grounds to trust his experience and reasoning. How then, while in this state, could he come to know that the bible is the word of god? How can he make the transition from atheist to Christian without being able to trust human experience? His position seems self-defeating. Having already demolished the ladders of knowledge and reason in an over eager embrace of cartesian skepticism the only route presuppositionalists leave themselves with, in order to accept Christianity, is fideism, in other words pure faith. Intellect and reason have been quietly dispensed with at this point. The curious thing is that presuppositionalists on youtube berate fideism and have been quick to dismissively label certain atheistic worldviews as fideistic, while they seem oblivious to the fideism that their own belief system rests upon.
