I personally like the eye contact between man and woman throughout this dance! Even during turns, you turn your head first and maintain eye contact. Hands are kept to the side folded at the elbow at 90 degrees while snapping fingers - in the SAME rhythm as you start clapping in the beginning. If you do not snap, join your thumb and middle finger like snapping and dance EXCEPT during steps 4 and 10. Snapping fingers are typically at the eye level of the dancer.
Here are the 10 basic steps danced in that order:
1. Avanzo y Retroceo: Advance and Retreat (2 groups long-short-short, long-short-short forward and 2 groups backwards)
2. Giro: Circle (4 groups in a circle)
3. Vuelta Entera: Whole Return (4 groups crossing sides with partner, 4 groups returning to original position)
4. Zapateo y Sarandeo: (Spanish: Zapatear = To tap/beat with shoes; Zarandear = To shake) The stomping section for the men is called zapateo and the diamond section for the women is called sarandeo. Men's rhythmic foot play are for 8 groups with their HANDS ON THE BACK or ON THE SIDE while women dance 2 sets of diamonds taking 4 groups for each diamond. Women keep LEFT HAND on their hip in a stylish way and use their RIGHT HAND to play with their skirt swaying it back and forth or do any figurine they love to do. Diamond does not have to be a diamond for women. They can even advance upto the man or around him and come back to their position keeping the pace and timing.
5. Vuelta Entera: Repeated as stated previously.
6. Zapateo y Sarandeo: Repeated as stated previously.
7. Media vuelta: Half Return. 4 groups crossing sides with partner.
8. Giro Final: Final circle - danced as a circle of 2 groups.
9. 3 steps forward: Left, Right, Left for both men and women. Preferably the left feet touching each other like a parada in tango.
10. La Oracion: The oration. Keep your right palm straight (like karate but take care not to chop!) and gently place on your partner's left shoulder. This is common for both men and women. Left hand can be on the side.
