Softimage XSI sorta sucks.. You be the judge.. Purchased this package some years back when Half Life 2 was making waves.. A friend of mine from Electronic Arts suggested that I do some stuff on it and could probably get a job at EA making games.. I didn't pursue it because I had other work I was doing so I just lost interest. Anyhow, I guess I didn't expect to get hired at my age into a company that would probably be looking for younger talent. Anyhow, I have this old copy of XSI sitting on the shelf, for a couple of years.. I decide I want to use my license (a code) with the linux binary on the same disk. I'm told, no, you can't use that license with the linux version of XSI, because the "foundation" license is strictly for Windows.. WTF.. I'm just warning people, if you get XSI from Softimage, don't expect to be treated like any of their other customers.. When I compared XSI to Blender on their forum, when talking about using blender with XSI, they banned me from the board and claimed it was because of "random discussion and software piracy". And I said no such thing in my discussion about pirating software.. However I did get a bit radical in my speak, I tend to act kind of prophetic (like a wacko evangelizing blender), but they didn't like it and dropped me with the ban to be lifted "never". This is what paying 500 dollars for a package gets you, and unsympathetic ear that can either take your business or leave it.. What would have solved the problem was if I could get the license I owned of XSI to work with the Linux version of XSI. But this is the reality of commercial software, versus open source software, you have limited rights with what you want to do, you are at the mercy of their sales department to determine the limitations of use. Another problem with commercial 3D applications is they are often developed by people who don't use the software actively, for people who do. Issues never get completely addressed, releases are buggy, it's not the same sort of software you would get from a in-house development team. The reason in-house studios use commercial shelf software for work, is it is what is being taught to the artists in the schools, its what the students think they need to learn, and it is the "value added benefit" that the schools can provide to bring the students in to learn.. What you learn on an high end package is no different than what you would learn with blender, it's what the studios expect, it's what the schools teach, and because its inaccessible to people without a significant purchase, it draws people to sign up for classes.. And the waiting lists can be long for such courses. Well it may not be now, but when I was in college there was a shortage of instructors as the studios would hog all the people that would instruct about the packages. These days I don't know what the environment is, but I'd expect it hasn't changed much.. But bit by bit I think Blender is breaking down the walls. I think the fear is that if people use open source the wage to pay an animator will go down because they will be competing with Indians, Chinese, etc.. Note those countries pirate such software, and some universities in China have the money to purchase licenses of XSI and such, you just don't hear about it. When I was in college, Chinese grad students told me about the many SGI workstations they had, that would sit unused because there just wasn't money to be made in 3D animation like that that could be made in high level programming research.. They saw it as a waste of time, therefore the workstations would never get used. But they had them!! Anyhow.. I think the purpose of selling licenses of software for individual platforms in order to control piracy is a cop-out.. Piracy is a scape-goat excuse for "perceived lost sales".. To what? Pirated copies? I don't see it.. To blender.. Maybe.. An Excuse to push consumers into usage-limiting deals? Yes, a big Yes.. It's just a (new?) way to squeeze money out of people..
