LACHIE JAMIESON ON DRUMS Lachie with the Freddy Wilson Band--1991-----. Back in Chicago in '52 he got to work with (More) Lachie with the Freddy Wilson Band--1991-----. Back in Chicago in '52 he got to work with pianist Al Haig who became his flat mate and taught Lachie piano theory and technique. Then he worked with Count Basie's sax man, Wardell Grey. Lachie told me, "Waggy-arsed little Wardell was nuts about philosophy and he swapped me a giant bag of purple pot for my copy of Oppensky's "Journey of Man" book. Another sax man I played with was Gene Ammons. When trumpeter Fats Navarro died, his close friend Sonny Rollins couldn't stand being in New York 'cause the whole town reminded him too much of Fats. So he split to Chicago. Gene Ammons told Sonny about the skinny white cat from New Zealand who could swing. "Sonny came and sat in with me one night. I was nervous as hell--but I hid it well and played OK.. A week later a guy in an old style zoot suit carrying a gold cane hopped up to me and said, "Where you been, man?"--Sonny been looking all over for you for 4 days, man. His drummer--got big trouble and in jail, man--Sonny wants you call him." I ran across town to Sonny's joint and he told me I was his new drummer. I thought I'd cracked the' big time' and I played my guts out for 6 wonderful gigs with the group. Then Sonny had to leave Chi-town and get back to New York for a record date. He said I could come with him but I'd have to have a work permit if I wanted to work in NY . I was an illegal immigrant so that was impossible . 2 years went by and I played lots of gigs in strip joints. Those chicks loved my skinny white ass. I got one job with Muddy Waters.-- 4 nights of rock drumming ('cause Muddy liked his drummers to have rock licks). I was learning fast. I played in the strip clubs and some nights at a mafia joint called The Liberty Inn. Then some cat talked me in to joining a quintet on tour. I thought it would be great travelling' around for 3 weeks with 4 cool spade cats in a great big Buick and a Customline Ford. We were travelling in two cars.. It never hit me that any people may be pissed off to see a white boy travelling and living with 5 Negroes. (One was our manager who set up the dates} It was 1955 and some people in the US were real square. A chick in Chicago had given me a beautiful zoot suit and a pair of brass knuckles as a going away present. In Benoit, Wisconsin, someone slashed the tyres of both our cars. That cost us all our money to replace so we took it in turns to sleep in the cars to protect the tyres as well as cutting in half our hotel costs . Two weeks later we were playing in Shreveport, Louisiana and some shit-head tipped off the Immigration fuzz. They claimed I was an alien and a "nigrah-lovin'" communist and I was sent to Cook County Jail until they arranged for me to be deported back to NZ.'' He lived in Auckland, NZ from '55 to'68 and taught a lot of NZ cats everything he'd learned in the US, including how to enjoy narcotics. Then he came to Australia. World-renowned pianist Dave MacRea attributes Lachie as an early influence, and said, "He yelled at us to try harder, educated audiences, and convinced venue owners to be more adventurous and promote inventive jazz." Other musicians who respected Lachie and learned from his dedication to "swing" are drummer John Pochee and pianist Mike Nock. In '56--'57 Mike knew Lachie in NZ. He said, " He was a prime influence on my playing and did a lot for me. He gave many of us what we yearned for--insight into the feel of Parker, Rollins, Horace Silver, Miles Davis, Monk and Dizzy." In '67 when the El Rocco jazz cellar opened in Kings Cross, it was the first organised bop house in the country. Lachie and the NZ-ers had been boppin' in Auckland since 1960. Lachie never made the big time in Australia--he fell in love with heroin and grass, and they sometimes kept him away from promoters that could have booked him for higher profile gigs. (Less)
