Soul Asylum - Runaway Train C'est en 1981 dans un garage de Minneapolis que trois adolescents fondent les Loud Fast Rules. (More) C'est en 1981 dans un garage de Minneapolis que trois adolescents fondent les Loud Fast Rules. Karl Mueller à la basse, Danny Murphy à la guitare et Dave Pirner à la batterie. En 1983, le batteur Grant Young rejoint le groupe, Dave Pirner devint alors chanteur avec une guitare rythmique. Le groupe change de nom pour devenir Soul Asylum. <br /> <br />Leur premier album, Say What You Will, Clarence... Karl Sold The Truck sort en 1984 sous le label Twin Tone. Le groupe sort ensuite 3 nouveaux opus et est considéré comme le groupe rock phare des Twin Cities (Minneapolis-St Paul). En 1988, Soul Asylum signe chez A&M Records et enregistre Hang Time puis And The Horse They Rode In On en 1990. C'est un échec commercial, le groupe pense alors à se séparer. Mais ils continuent finalement leur route ensemble, le groupe survit grâce à une tournée acoustique en 1991 dans le Midwest américain, sous l'impulsion de Pirner et Murphy. Cette année-à est cruciale. Enregistrement de Grave Dancer's Union chez Columbia Records, album qui propulse grâce au tube légendaire Runaway Train le groupe dans le top des charts, recevant par la même occasion le Grammy Award pour la meilleure chanson rock de l'année 1992. <br /> <br />À noter que le clip de Runaway Train montre une série de photos d'enfants disparus et dont on a pas encore retrouvé la trace. À la fin du clip, Dave Pirner apparaît et dit "si tu vois un de ces enfants, ou si tu es l'un d'entre eux, s'il te plaît appelle ce numéro". <br /> <br />Le succès semble déstabiliser Dave Pirner et sa bande, préférant la simplicité et l'intimité au mode de vie du grand showbiz. Après la sortie d'un Live en 1994, le groupe sort en 1995 l'album Let Your Dim Light Shine, au son plus grunge que le précédent et donc moins commercial. Misery est le premier single et fait figure de titre grunge par excellence dans la discographie du groupe. Sur cet album, Grant Young à la batterie est remplacé par Sterling Campbell. <br /> <br />En 1997, le groupe se produit en Live à Grand Forks dans le Dakota du Nord pour un concert au profit des victimes de l'ouragan Katrina et des inondations de la "Red River" qui l'a provoquées dans la région. Ce live After the Flood enregistré le 28 juin 1997 (18 titres), sortira en 2004. <br /> <br />Un an plus tard, c'est le retour en studio et un son plus calme et légèrement plus folk, avec l'album Candy From A Stranger. Pour Columbia, cet album est un échec commercial mais pour Soul Asylum il n'est toujours pas question de faire la moindre promo pour ses albums, le groupe s'éloignant un peu plus de la nouvelle scène rock Américaine (trés commerciale et fortement marquée par un nouveau son très "teenage" venant de Californie...) dont il ne se reconnait pas. <br /> <br />Une longue période de sommeil commence pour le groupe. Dave Pirner enregistre en 2002 un album solo trés "blues rock" (pas étonnant puisqu'il a déménagé à La Nouvelle-Orléans). Il s'intitule Faces And Names sur le label Ultimatum records. <br /> <br />En mai 2004, la triste nouvelle tombe. Karl Mueller (basse) est atteint d'une tumeur inopérable à la gorge et à l'œsophage. Il succombera 13 mois plus tard, le 17 juin 2005, malgré un rude combat. Il avait 41 ans. Jusqu'à sa mort, Karl n'avait cessé de jouer de cette basse qui ne l'avait plus quitté depuis le collège. Il a ainsi participé largement à l'enregistrement du dernier album de Soul Asylum, qui sort en juillet 2006 et qui s'intitule The Silver Lining. <br /> <br />Pour remplacer Karl, qui même malade jouait encore en concert à Minneapolis avec ses amis (un tube dans la gorge), Dave Pirner ne pense qu'à une seule personne, un ami d'enfance, le bassiste Tommy Stinson. Michael Bland (batterie) avait lui rejoint le groupe dés le début de l'enregistrement. Cet album fait figure d'hommage au grand monsieur, simple et disponible, qu'était Karl Mueller.
