The Dears : Toronto Presented by : The Touch ------------------------------------------------------------ The steady (More) Presented by : The Touch ------------------------------------------------------------ The steady drizzle that welcomed the Dears to Toronto last night provided the perfect cinematic overtones for a bands music that is coloured by heart wrenching anthems and prayers for deliverance. The Dears tour kicked off that night in Toronto but not before a stolen tour bus and a hospitalized driver. For the Dears, it’s just another chapter in their story. Earlier that evening we made the trek to the MOD club to witness the anticipated performance armed with a video camera and some sound gear. Upon arrival we called keyboard and vocalist Natalia Yanchak, singer Murray Lightburn’s wife. Given the events earlier that day she informed us that the Dears were running behind schedule and so, our opportunity to meet them would have to be delayed. We found shelter from the rain in a café corridor and passed the time sneaking sips of beer and exchanging phone calls with Natalia. Unfortunately, given the time constraints we eventually learned that a meeting could not be arranged. Although we were unable to capture a one-on-one performance or interview, we did however get the go ahead to film the show. So we went in. Once our media passes were provided we set up and eagerly documented everything we could of the passionate performance. The show began with a whisper, but not the kind of whisper that goes easily ignored. Murray began the set with a surprise appearance in the crowd. While the band awaited his arrival on the stage he preached the gospel of the dears with a soulful rendition as his band mates provided ghostlike harmonies to Murray’s conviction that “I'll make it right, this time”. As Murray waded through the audience the onlookers stepped aside in awe. The effect was as if Murray parted the red sea as he made his way to the stage while the crowd joined in the rendition. This act alone set the tone for the night. With the rain pouring on the windowsills and their hectic day behind them Murray took the stage. He clutched his guitar like an old friend and sang songs that would elevate the audience and the Dears into a combined collective; the way a sermon can tug at your heart strings as the congregation reaches for their songbooks. From that moment on, the Dears weren’t singing for themselves and they weren’t singing for their fans they were singing for a cause – they were singing prayers for deliverance. After the show we scrounged together enough change to purchase two 69-cent rolls from a nearby shop, opting to forego the cheese buns due to the added cost at $1.69 each. We ate in a nearby bus stop hoping for an opportunity to meet the Dears after the show. After waiting and waiting to no avail we headed home a little disappointed with our footage and loaded the files. Upon the initial viewing we can now say that our slight disappointment was quickly lifted. As the honest and passionate footage played on the screen we realized the true affect of what we were allowed to capture. words / sound : Luke Ludgate / The Touch image / edit: James Featherstone / The Touch (Less)
