De band debuteerde op 13 augustus 1965 in de Matrix club in San Francisco. De bandleden waren Marty Balin (gitaar, zang), Paul Kantner (zang, gitaar), Jorma Kaukonen (gitaar, zang), Signe Anderson (zang, werd later vervangen door Grace Slick), Jack Casady (bas, kwam in oktober 1965 bij de band), Spencer Dryden (drums, kwam in juni 1966 bij de band) en Grace Slick (zang, piano, werd in oktober 1966 de zangeres). Het eerste grote concert van de band ging in februari 1966 door in het Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco. Daarna speelden ze nog op het Berkeley Folk Festival, Monterey Jazz Festival, Monterey Pop Festival, Woodstock, en op Altamont. De band had groot succes op het Woodstock-festival waar ze om 7 uur 's morgens op de laatste dag van het festival het podium betraden met Slicks legendarische woorden "now you will see morning maniac music". De LP Surrealistic Pillow bevat de twee bekendste stukken White Rabbit en Somebody to love. White Rabbit beschrijft de effecten van LSD in een analogie met Alice in Wonderland. De LP is intussen op CD verkrijgbaar. In 1996 werd de band opgenomen in de Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Het nummer White Rabbit wordt gebruikt in de uit 1998 daterende cult-film Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas met Johnny Depp (als het karakter Raoul Duke) en Benicio Del Toro (als Dr. Gonzo) in de hoofdrollen. Dr. Gonzo vraagt Raoul Duke om bij het stuk waar Grace Slick 'Feed your head' zingt, de schemerlamp in het bad waar hij in zit te gooien, teneinde zo een gewisse dood te sterven. In 1985 maakte de band een come-back onder de naam Starship met het album Knee deep in the hoopla, waarop de hits We built this city en Sara stonden. In 1987 volgde het album No protection met de megahit Nothing's gonna stop us now. Zangeres Grace Slick heeft ook solowerk gedaan. (Less)
