04.05.05 - Ichiban v Mushrooms [finish-].avi A post from the old MM.com by Matty Foster after the game: I have already written about this game (More) A post from the old MM.com by Matty Foster after the game: I have already written about this game ad nauseum, thought about this game ad nauseum, relived that last free throw ad nauseum. I'm nauseated! I won't write a game report, but I will write down what I believe are the top ten moments/plays/themes from this ESPN Classic match. 10) Ken's tough shooting - Ken shot 80% in this game, and the Mushrooms did not allow him a single easy shot. Ken came up big with some huge plays, tempered throughout the game. The Mushrooms could not have defended him any better. 9) Mario's first half - Mario's penetration in the first half single-handedly forced Ichiban to shift from man defense to a zone. He was unstoppable, using his weasel moves to confuse any defender that Ichiban threw at him. 8) Matty G's free throw shooting - Matty G continually drew fouls from the Mushrooms players. That is a valuable skill to have. He was relatively accurate from the line, although I don't have the exact figures. He finished with 10 points, and I think 6 were from free throws. 7) Mushrooms unforced errors - the Mushrooms shot themselves in the foot with unforced error after unforced error. There was some disgraceful passing in this game. 6) Ichiban's individual final minutes play - Ichiban could have played much smarter as a team. In the final three minutes they put up at least three unnecessary, and tough, shots. 5) Timbo draws the charge - Having watched this on tape...I'm still undecided. It is clearly a flop, but admittedly Kwok sells it extremely impressively. He should audition for Home & Away. I know I barely touched him, but on the tape it looks like I am a semitrailer that just knocked him to high heaven. The best part on the tape is when I come back on screen and I'm yelling at Adriel "Cmon man! He's a flopper!" 4) Strokes' steal - I hadn't realised this on the game night, but with about 40 seconds left the Mushrooms lost the ball, and Matty G was dribbling back down to his basket. Just past the halfway line, I made a steal that, in the end, proved quite crucial and lead to "The Shot". But not before I went Prime Time and lauched a three of my own. Luckily Jeff grabbed the rebound. 3) "The Nullifier" - Having reviewed the tape, all participants agreed that the final shot was the best available decision. After JC threw the ball to me, Ken came and defended the three point shot. I dribbled once to my left. At this stage, Lynzy was open in the far left corner; there was not enough time to get him the ball, as this would have required two swing passes and then Kow to shoot. Mario was open at the top of the key, just inside the three-point line. All were in agreement that this is not a shot that Mario is accustomed to. JC was below the free throw line, and Jub was about an arm's length away. I believe Jeff was the other player on the court, and he was nowhere to be seen. I think he was out at the three-point line, on the left. Anyway, everyone agreed that even though it was not a great play, it was the best available. I believe if I had hesitated, Ken would have been able to cleanly disrupt my shot and we would have lost. Instead, foul. I managed to hit the first free throw, hence the term "The Nullifier". What did I nullify you ask? Read on... 1 equal) "The Prime Time Runner" - Ken's shot, on tape, is straight ridiculous. It is an amazing, clutch shot and it never ceases to be impressive. I have heard that other Ichiban players felt they were cutting and could have had an easier shot, but watching the tape I don't think there was a pass available because Jeff and Muzza were hawking Ken as he drove. Great, great shot. 1 equal) "The Shot" - We had struggled the entire half to this point, scoring a total of five points until this shot - three free throws from me, and a putback from Zomo. After I stole the ball from Ichiban, I came up and launched a three. We had numbers, as Andrew and Matty G were still back in their half. Jeff got the board and kicked it to Lynzy, he thought about the shot before kicking it to Mario. Ken lunged at Mario, who lobbed it back to Kow, who launched a sweet three, which put us up by one with about twenty seconds left. Lynzy left his finger pointed in the air, the biggest show of emotion he's had since joing the Mushrooms. Simply awesome. (Less)
