Rebel Strike - Speedrun (Luke's Campaign) in 22'38 min [3/5] Stefan Mahrla's speedrun for the game "Star Wars Rogue Squadron III: Rebel Strike" (More) Stefan Mahrla's speedrun for the game "Star Wars Rogue Squadron III: Rebel Strike" (using Luke's campaign) in 22'38 minutes.
I wanted to send this run to SDA (SpeedDemosArchive), but it wasn't accepted, because of bad (video & sound) quality. So I just uploaded it here including the comments I wrote for the run:
This is my first speedrun. I got a VCR a week ago and wanted to do a speedrun for Super Mario Sunshine. But there is already a good one by Peter "Dragorn" Branam-Lefkove , so I decided to do one for Star Wars Rogue Squadron III: Rebel Strike.
The game has 19 levels, but you only have to finish seven levels to beat the last regular level. The game has a lot of long cutscenes and you can't skip them the first time you play the levels. That's why the actual time is nearly two times as long as the in-game time. So, here are some comments for the levels:
Level 1 - Revenge of the Empire - 3:11
The worst thing is the unskippable intro. When you make a mistake, you have to restart and watch the whole intro again. And after 30+ times playing through this game you really hate these unskippable intros/cutscenes ;)
In the first part I collected the advanced shield upgrade. You don't really lose time to get it (maybe 2 - 3 seconds). But you need it for later levels.
Second part was good.
Third part was also good, but I'm sure you can save 2 - 3 seconds in the big rooms.
Level 2 - Defiance on Dantooine - 3:27
On the first part you have to boost over the edges of the mountains for a good time. Of course use the boost as often as possible.
On the last part I collect the advanced laser upgrade. You can't miss it, if you always use the left path.
Level 3 - Defenders of Ralltiir - 2:45
That's probably the worst time in my run. You can bomb the bridges and the AT-ATs. But I only bomb the bridges, because I always miss these AT-ATs with bombs. So I used the safe way with the cables.
Level 4 - Extraction from Ralltiir - 2:09
At the beginning you control an AT-ST. Just run through the level and kill some enemies on your way. But at the end you have to shoot all the enemies in the "square room" + the APC to enter the next part.
Here you also have to run to the end. Then use the e-web cannon and shoot the stormtroopers as fast as possible.
Level 5 - Battlefield Hoth - 4:38
No real time savers in this level. You can jump over the first AT-AT's foot to save a second. With the taun-taun just run straight through the field. Then be fast
with the e-web cannon and shoot the three AT-STs.
On the last part you can't save/lose time, because it is timed. So only kill the TIE bombers and protect the transporters.
Level 6 - Speeder Bike Pursuit - 3:04
This level is hard when you play for speed, because you can easily crash. Even if you know the level very well, you will sometimes crash. And if you don't crash by yourself, the ramming scouts will help you ;)
But finally I got a good run through this level, even without crashing. And I wasn't missing the last trooper with the lightsaber, hehe.
Level 7 - Triumph of the Rebellion - 3:24
Again a level where you control an AT-ST. You can run through the first part and ignore all AT-STs that aren't in your way. But at the end your health is very low, that's why I collected the advanced shield upgrade in the first level.
Shoot some enemies and place the charges during the second part. Then Tycho appears and you must follow him. But don't overtake him or he will shoot you. Run to the exit and the last regular level is beaten.
Total time = (3:11 + 3:27 + 2:45 + 2:09 + 4:38 + 3:04 + 3:24) = 22:38
Btw. thanks to Daniel "Burning Death/Supreme" Viebrock (for encouraging me to play until I have a sub 23 min time) and Brandon "bcole23" Cole (for his great FAQ).
