Supertramp is een Britse symfonische rockgroep, met een door Wurlitzer piano en saxofoon gedomineerd (More) Supertramp is een Britse symfonische rockgroep, met een door Wurlitzer piano en saxofoon gedomineerd geluid. De band wordt in 1969 opgericht door Rick Davies (zang en toetsinstrumenten) en de latere King Crimson tekstschrijver Richard Palmer-James (zang en gitaar). Belangrijkste andere groepslid is Roger Hodgson (zang, gitaar en toetsinstrumenten), die tot 1983 deel uitmaakt van de groep. De eerste twee elpees worden gefinancierd door de rijke Nederlandse zakenman Sam Miesegaes en zijn niet erg succesvol. Op het debuutalbum is nog niet het welbekende Supertramp-geluid te horen, maar al wel de songschrijfkwaliteiten van Davies en Hodgson. Na de eerste en de tweede plaat worden alle bandleden - op Davies en Hodgson na - vervangen. Indelibly Stamped veroorzaakt in Engeland nog wel enige opschudding door de blote borsten op de voorkant. In 1973 komen John Helliwell (blaasinstrumenten en zang), Dougie Thomson (basgitaar) en Bob Siebenberg (soms vermeld als Bob C. Benberg) (slagwerk) bij de groep en maken zij de elpee Crime Of The Century. De plaat wordt geproduceerd door Ken Scott en voor de opnames wordt tijd noch moeite gespaard. Dit levert een plaat op met een bijzonder goede geluidskwaliteit en vele geluidseffecten. De plaat klinkt als n geheel, waardoor het lijkt alsof het een conceptelpee is. In Engeland wordt de single Dreamer een top tien hit en haalt het album nummer 1. In Nederland staat het nummer School jarenlang in de Top 100 aller tijden. Crisis? What Crisis? wordt onder enige tijdsdruk gemaakt en valt in eerste instantie tegen. Wel toert Supertramp in 1975 en 1976 succesvol door Europa en de Verenigde Staten. In Nederland scoren ze met Give A Little Bit in 1977 de eerste hit en komt de elpee Even In The Quietest Moments op nummer 1. Dit album werd voor een groot deel gemaakt op een bergtop ergens in Colorado. Door de ijle lucht daar, werden de stemmen van de zangers wat anders. John Helliwell kon hierdoor niet meer op zijn sax spelen. Dit deel is daarom in Los Angeles opgenomen. Hoogtepunt van dit album is het tien minuten durende en voor de helft instrumentale Fool's Overture. Na het artistieke hoogtepunt met Crime Of The Century volgt het commercile hoogtepunt in 1979 met Breakfast In America. The Logical Song en Breakfast In America doen het goed als single. De kortere en meer pop-gerichte nummers worden door een groter publiek gewaardeerd. Op deze plaat is ook goed te horen dat Davies en Hodgson niet meer samen componeren, maar dat ieder de helft van het repertoire schrijft en zingt. Davies zorgt voor de ernstige en nuchtere nummers, Hodgson heeft een luchtigere, dromerigere aanpak. Van de concerten in Parijs in november 1979 verschijnt de dubbelelpee Paris. Op Famous Last Words is de scheiding tussen Davies en Hodgson nog beter te horen. De creativiteit is er een beetje uit en na een uitgebreide wereldtournee in 1983 houdt Hodgson ermee op om een solocarrire te beginnen. In 1984 scoort hij een hit met Had A Dream (Sleeping With The Enemy) van het album In The Eye Of The Storm. Brother Where You Bound is de eerste plaat zonder Hodgson en de laatste uit de succesperiode van Supertramp. De plaat klinkt ritmischer en minder symfonisch. Cannonball is het meest succesvolle nummer, de anti-Sovjetsong Brother Where You Bound, waarop David Gilmour van Pink Floyd de gitaarpartijen inspeelt, wordt door ingewijden als het beste beschouwd. Free As A Bird en Live '88 tonen definitief aan dat Supertramp op zijn retour is. De platen klinken voorspelbaar en missen enthousiasme en creativiteit. De verkoopcijfers bevestigen dit beeld. Curieus feit is dat de single I'm Beggin' You de nummer 1-positie haalt in de Amerikaanse dancecharts. In 1990 haalt de compilatie The Very Best Of de nummer 1-positie in Nederland en komt School uit 1974 alsnog in de hitparades. Vanaf 1997 komt Supertramp (Davies, Helliwell en Siebenberg, aangevuld met andere muzikanten) weer met nieuw materiaal en treden zij weer op, maar niet meer met het succes van weleer. (Less)

Call me a ponce if you must, but I love this track on two levels. First, it is just a fantastic live (More) Call me a ponce if you must, but I love this track on two levels. First, it is just a fantastic live performance of a superb song, in my humble opinion; and second, the drum part is absolutely perfect for the song. Almost every rock song you hear has a drum part that plays a beat on 2 and 4, or if you are listening to something a bit more sophisticated, the beat becomes grouped in 7 or 9 or whatever. But it is a constant beat. 'Dreamer' however has a totally different approach. Here the drummer, Bob C. Benberg (also known as Bob Siebenberg) plays what I would call a very 'melodic' part. I love the tom fills he does, and I love the cymbal work. It's brilliant. His accents when he does play a bit more 'conventionally' are often on the 1 and the 3, and this, frankly, throws the hell out of me. I love the whole outro where he is rolling with his feet, but again, for me, things are displaced from the norm since to start with in the outro the snare roll thing starts in a weird place compared to the rolling bass drum / hi-hat, and it took me a while to 'get' what I presumed to be an easy bit, because it felt so odd. It's a masterpiece of drumming. I used to play this pretty much note for note, but I did not have much chance to rehearse this this weekend. Therefore Supertramp buffs are likley to spot the errors and omissions. Anyway, you get the gist of it I hope :-) This is one of only three songs I have ever felt the need to transcribe. It was the only way I could learn the 'melody' which I think of as trying to play a xylophone. You are almost having to play actual musical notes, as opposed to beating out a rhythm. What a fantastic drummer Bob is! (if you want to know, the others are The Police 'One World', and Genesis 'Riding the Scree'. I had to transcribe bits of The Police Walking On The Moon too, 'cos I had no idea if what he was doing was actually playable.....!) I used Dreamer once when I was teaching a primary school class (5 -- 9 year olds) about different aspects of drumming. This turned out to be their favourite piece! For any Supertramp fans I have offended, apologies. I am not a true 'fan', though I happen to think that the live album 'Paris' that this cover is taken from, is one of the greatest live albums there is. The production is just incredible. (Less)
